That's an unusual choice for a rod.

lol its a Hillman wagon and they are getting rarer over here now, it belongs to the guy who built my engine, well it belongs to his wife, Steves rod was off the road for a freshen up so they bought his wifes Hillman, it has a supercharged starfire engine in it, pretty much the same engine as mine with the front two cylinders cut off, all parts from my engine are interchangeable with there starfire 4

Yup,those Hillmans have all but disappeared over here,now..Have had a few myself,in the early days as a teenager..They took a good thrashing..:eek::cool::cool:

Yep: I had one too...the second car I ever owned.
The first was a '34 Ford tudor, which I traded in on the Hillman.
Thought I was moving up in the world.
How dumb was that?

But the Hillman had a bench front seat and a column change...far more comfortable for "hand to hand combat"!

Sigh.

Don't miss the Hillman; but I wish I still had that '34!

On the plus side though; I've still got the girl...forty-five years on the 24th June just gone.

Had today off so i thought i would have a look at making a belt tensioner , well after farting around all day i came up with this.
it uses all three bolts down the left side of the timing case and also mounts off the engine block and engine mount, it has crush tubes where the two alen key adjusting bolts are and i welded the nuts to the back side of it, i have boxed it all in as well, it just slides back and forward to tension the belt and the alen key bolts lock it in place, seems to work ok and looks a bit better than the last idea i had for this when i had it hanging under the snout, its mounted a lot stronger and doesn't have any movement in the bracket like the last one i was making, just need to make a support bracket from the underside of the snout down to the block to support the snout and its done, :D

Should work fine, Barnsey! Sometimes the simplest solution takes the longest to get figured out!!!!

That brings back some memories. My cousin had a Hillman Minx that he had installed a vacuum operated "Wolf Whistle" on. Thing sucked so much vacuum from that underpowered engine that it would almost stall the motor. I remember chasing some girls in another car and every time we would catch them and he would turn on the wolf whistle, it would knock 10 to 15 mph of the Hillman's speed. Crazy teenagers!:LOL:

finished the tensioner then realised i had a spare idler pulley left over so i mounted it on the long side of the belt to stop it flapping around, the bracket mounts to the two lower thermostat housing bolts and i just need to weld a small tab on the bracket to go back to the extractor bolt to stop any sideways movement under load. I tried to do something about the tensioner 6 months or so ago but couldn't think of anything to do, its funny how one idea leads to another and it all just starts to fall in place. :D :D

The new bracket looks like it should work great! The water pump (? - black pulley in the middle) seems to have a v-belt notch - what drives it? Can't see a corresponding notch from the angles shown, or I'm not looking in the right place.

just thought i would have a quick play with windows movie maker, not real good but once i have a bit more of a play and work out the editing i should be able to make a better one lol

the water pump pulley is chrome lol, but you can be forgiven as its dirty lol, its driven off a v pulley that is also mounted behind the serpentine pulley on the crank, it will also run the alternator :)
