transmission options

Behind the FE, I understand that you either had a c6 or a toploader from the factory, correct?

what other manual transmission options were there?
I've had c6's in two of my trucks. With the 300/6 I didn't mind it, with the 7.3 diesel I despised it and replaced it with a zf5 (which I'm very happy about).

I'd consider the toploader, tho I'd either have to gear the rear end high, or find a gearvendor$ od. BTW, anyone have a link for the gear ratios of the toploader? can't seem to find it.

Just get Mike Forte (one of our CHR advertisers) to put either a 5 speed TKO or a 6 speed T-56 together for you as a package complete with bellhousing, clutch, etc... He builds them for the Cobra's and stuff, too... Probably got what you need on the shelf!!! His stuff is all first rate parts, too BTW!!!!!

Hi Drew,
The FE truck gearboxes are not a favorable choice. The toploader is fine but with fuel prices on the rise I would use an overdrive TKO 5 speed or T-56 6 speed. I stock almost all combinations of tranny, bellhousing, flywheel & clutch kit with all the mounting hardware. I also make an external hydraulic slave kit so that a hydraulic throw-out bearing failure isn't going to happen to you.
BTW, The gear vendors unit is more money than a new 5 or 6 speed Tremec. I also sell Richmond transmissions too...

t-56 with double over is nice, tho .5 is pretty deep reduction, and the trans costs less than a GV. I'm not too worried about GVW, this is my play truck, I got the big f250 for the heavy stuff.

With an adapter you can also put the ford aod auto in it. I have a 67 mustang coupe with a 1963 406cu in fe with an aod and 3.73 9in rear end that i drive as hard as i want with no problems.

I have a 1967,F250 with a 390FE and a NP 437. It really works great and I have 3.50 gears . I turn approx 2600rpm @ 80mph. It all seems to work really well for a combination work truck and towing rig.

You do know that Ford made an OD version of the toploader? I have one out of a Torino in my old Mustang, and Ford trucks had them for years. Good strong transmission, but the jump from 2 to 3 is a bit much. An FE will pull through it, though.

ford also used borg warner t10 small block and super t10 bigblocks. high gear on 4 speeds are normally 1-1 so overdrive or five speed. I used one out of a late model stang with 1/4 plate adapter I bought on ebay behind a 428. works well.
