302W with 351W heads

I am a motorcycle guy. On a whim I bought a ford 302W motor from a guy for $125. The reason I did is because he had just installed new pistons and rods in it. It came with 351W heads. That is all the motor came with is the heads and the block. Really I am just curious about the parts I should be buying. Should I buy an intake manifold for a 351 or a 302? I did grab one off of ebay pretty cheap, and it came with the carb. It is Ford 351w 2bbl. It came with a Holley 500 cfm carb. Will that fit on the setup I have now, or did I just throw money into the toilet? Thanks for any help!

Not much information to go by..... What kind of car, which heads? The '69 351 W. heads were the hot ticket for 302's for years till all the good aftermarket aluminum stuff came out.....

Heads are the same, so you'll need the 302 intake. 351W is a taller block, so when you use a 351 W. block with any Windsor head, you use the 351 W intake....

Well the guy said the block is from an 1980 mustang. That's about all I know. I should really look up the numbers before anything else. However, since I need to get a new intake, do 302 intakes differ? And when I get the new intake, will I be able to use the carb I just got off of the 351 intake? Thanks!

'80 Mustang would be a 5.0 (302) intake, should work fine. If the carb and intake are both 2 barrel, it'll work...

If it came with 351w heads were they already on the motor???
If they were you should have sleved bolts on the heads. The valves in the 351 windsor are bigger and are the better head the 302 intake should fit that head.
Oh you can't use that 351w intake on the 302 block.

Unless they are the 69 heads because they are closed chamber.
But it realy depends on what year your block is and what heads were on it origanally.
The letter C is for the 60's and D is for the 70's and so on.
So if you see C7 that means it's a 1967, hope this helps some.
Once you ID your block and heads we can give you a idea of what you have good or bad. Kurt

like some have said it will have to do with the cc of the heads . but i put the 351 old style stud heads on a 289 . and put the new rail rocker arm 302 heads on the 351 same casting and cc bolt holes needed to be drill out bigger from 7/16 to 1/2.the 302 intake can fit the tall deck 351 with the price motor sports intake kit. here one thats over 430 cid i did :3dSMILE:and just plain nasty

Hmmm- Pat, that 351 of yours would just fit in my '31 and bolt right in place, even the C4 would work except I would have to change intakes to get the hood back on.

Now back to the question - the 351W heads will work on the 302W/5.0 though you do need to bush the 1/2" bolt holes to 7/16" (Summit sells the bushings, ~50 bucks). The 302W needs a 221-302W intake - an Edelbrock Performer or Performer RPM both work well. They also have a 2bbl intake as well if that's you thing, but it is a race type Victor, not well suited for a DD. There are 351W heads that are junk and good ones, with the best being the D0OE. They too need some help, like screw in rocker studs and the exhaust ports cleaned up by removing the EGR hump. They will probably need new valve guides as these vintage Fords wore them elliptically. So with that said, and by the time you have stock heads rebuilt, you meet or exceed the cost of a low end set of aluminum heads. A good iron head would be the late '90s Explorer/Expedition GT40P's if you can find a low mileage set. If not, you will spend as much to rebuild as those cheap 351W's.
