351 will fit nicely and headers can be cobbled up enuff to fit ,, i put one in a 64 falcon several years ago .. had to join a few tubes in a tri/y fashion

i say go 347 but what do i know i'am a chevy guy LOL
x2 on the 347, local guy here has one in his 67 fastback mustang with a 5 speed, runs 10.60's on the juice 11.2's without and he drives it 100 miles round trip to get to our track runs pump gas. does pretty dang good.

I would build the 302 and stroke it, and run the Cleveland heads with a differant intake.
They call them clever engine's now. But back some 30 years ago we called the Mexican style Boss's. In my experince they are very hard to beat. Summit has a good C - 4 they sell but with that kind of HP The regular C - 4 with a shift kit won't stand up.

ive got a 331 built for boost and it made 511hp and 615 ft lbs with 9 lbs from a turbo. great motor but like said the stock block is on borrowed time. i know you can cruise around alot of the stang sites and find parts dirt cheap. i would go with the 302 based if its mostly a cruiser,plus blocks and parts are a dime a dozen. ive got a h/c/i on a stock bottom end with all the bolt ons on my 91 and it runs pretty good. theres my 2 cents,lol.
So you want 450 streetable hp, with a car that does minimal track time, and for a fair budget?
Not knowing what you think is a fair budget, ($5000 is fair to some and unfair to others) I would think seriously about upgrading to some heavy duty forged parts, so the 347 option would cost no more than the same in 302 cubes.
And then I would fit up a vortex type supercharger. You get a very streetable engine, bulk torque and an ear to ear grin. And you can buy that stuff second hand if brand new is outside of your budget.
i m going to be in my roller 302 around a grand and its going to run mid to high 12's on pump gas. its a mule motor!!
I always wonder about 302/351 builds being more expensive. The machine work cost the same. Forged pistons should be about the same. stroker crank will cost a bit more. Heads the same, balancing will cost the same,bearings ,rings should be close, maybe a bit more on the bearings for the 51. Ign should be the same, headers should be a bit more. Although at Crites a set for the 351 were only 350. The arp bolts will be a bit more because of the different size. Overall should not be more than 10/15 percent, but what a bang for the buck. Putting a 351 w block in a early falcon/comet/mustang only requires a 3/4'' block on top of the m/m. have made the swap many times. Again there will be as many ways to build as there are builders.
i chose and run a .040 over 351W.....nothing real fancy with Edelbrock RPM heads, hyd roller cam and dual quads.....the first tranny was a C-4.....one hit of the throttle and it lunched....bought an AOD from Hughes....best tranny and gears i've ever had on any rod.....the AOD is an inch longer or so....easy swap....coupled with 4.11's it runs low to mid 2k rpms at highway speeds and will wildly kick the tires loose....its not a vacuum tranny, the cable is easy to set....and it works great
I agree with Dave on the engine 351.
I have have had to many C - 4's brake on me.
I would go with the small block C - 6. they just stand up better.
Even with the C - 4's being beefed up, they just don't stand up IMPO!!!
