Right intake for my combo build

I have a 1969 302 stock bottom , 268H Comp Cam , GT40P heads and a Edelbrock 600 CFM carb . I have 2 to choose from 1st being a 84 Ford dual plane from a Mustang and 2nd a 1976 289 Edelbrock torker .

I have heard the Torker is great for full throttle but I do want drive ability and decent fuel mileage .

Torker could be to much for the heads and cam combo ??

The '84 Dual plane is almost the same as a Performer in design good low end off idle to about 5,000 RPM and would be more mileage friendly than the Torker as far as the power bands go and the type of driving you describe use the dual-plane.For an intake that would give you the best of both worlds a Weiand Stealth is a good choice.

Bobby, I agree with Jeff. It sounds like you are trying to use one of two manifolds you already have, and if that is the case, the stock Ford is the lesser of the two evils. But to take advantage of the cam and heads you have an aluminum hi rise dual plane will really make a big difference in the torque and seat of pants feel.

They aren't all that expensive now and you can find good used ones in the $ 75-$100 range at swap meets and on Ebay. Even new ones like the Performer aren't very much more if you shop around. A lot of the 5.0 guys now want efi so carb intakes are pretty plentiful and cheaper than at one time. You could probably throw that Torker in the blast cabinet, put it on Ebay, and make enough to almost pay for one of the ones we mention. You can also probably get a few bucks for the Ford intake.

Also there are some offshore knockoffs that you can find at vendors who go to swap meets, and I know some people knock them, but I am running one on my 23 that I paid around $ 100 for new at Turkey Run, and it works fine and looks like a more expensive brand. In fact, there is a pad on the top that has been ground smooth to remove someones brand name, so it evidently is also sold as a different brand too.

Just another way to go for you possibly.

Bobby - I'm using the Performer RPM along with the 600 cfm E'brock carb. It seems to be a nice trade off - dual/single plane. The Performer(idle-5000) vs Performer RPM(1500-6500) - the RPM moves the performance range just a bit higher in the rpm range. I bought mine new at a swap meet for $100, and then had it Jet-Hot coated. Of course the camshaft that you use should have some bearing too.

I just went out and gasket matched the 2 , The heads have REALLY BIG SHOW :D and the Ford intake is very small at the ports . Think I will have to get something of a lot better match , no use in choking up the breathing system doing it wrong .

Now I will be on a comparison search learning what the differences are and why :CRY:

Neither of the intakes you have on hand are suitable. Use an Edelbrock Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth. Either of them will match up with your cam (1500-5000) better than what you have on hand. I've seen a motor pick up 40 hp with a change from a Performer to a Performer RPM. (Low-rise to High-rise, dual-plane). The worst street manifold in the group is the single plane Torker. It needs a cam that makes power 3500-7000.

Sorry Dave, I didn't look at your link however was studying port sizes and carb heights the other day for a stroker windsor type 427 to fit under a Cobra hood

any one use the roush yates N head ? jerry ?

Jerry - I'm just picking on you today:eek: But I do like the 427 Windsor stroker idea. I believe one of the Roush motors is that size and I've seen a couple at a Goodguys show at Rhinebeck. Somewhere I have a picture, but since I've rebuilt my computer twice in the last year and lots of photos are 'elsewhere', can't find it now.

Dave It was a rebuild of a world produsts block 427 that all we used was his block, crank, manifold and oil pan--it was pretty botched up and we went another .010 so its now 429, has afr heads, headsers will be made from some custom ss flanges that I had made for 1.875 tube to fit that stupid port shape with the dual bolt pattern---after headers/side pipes are done and its running and dynoed I'll post numbers.
