    Question 302 Mass Air Flow Sensor

     



    Can anyone tell me if the Mass Air Flow Sensors used on Ford 302 EFI engines are interchangeable between different car models, ie, Crown Vic to Mustang and so forth? Any suggestions as to where I can find this information?

    What maf (year, make and model) do you have and what (maf) do you wanna use?

    Most of the maf's for Ford, or aftermarket maf's, are calibrated for certain injector size and certain computer. C&L and Pro M are probably the most popular aftermarket maf's. If you want to stay within the Ford family of maf's, then you will need to check injector size, computer and flow chart for what you have and compare it to what you are looking at installing.

    Some guys are putting on Lightening maf's on their Mustangs, but they have to either get a chip or get their computer retuned for the different air flow and voltages of that maf.

    crown vics I believe uses something like 14 lb injectors I think it says on the little stamped area of the mass air unit all mustangs came with 19 pound up to 95, I would certainly get the stang wiring comp harness and injectors if you plan to use it with the vic motor it takes well to mods 89 mustang is the best one a9l if its a stick or a9p for auto computer etc no air bag wiring to mess with etc ford or fms makes an eec performance and wiring guide that is just great might help you with some of this I found it here http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...799926-8783261

    Peter I ain't never seen no Chevy in a Cobra.

    I'm not trying to start any Chevy/Ford flame war here cause I have both.

    Yeah that a9l ford mustang computer is a good one! The one in my 95 GT (94/95 GT and cobra computers) bites and is tough to modify the code!!!

    I'd go with the a9l computer, 77 Pro M maf, 24 lb injectors and 65mm TB. That should easily get you a very nice performing Ford motor with mild heads and cam!

    John your question is kind of vague, are you referring to the whole unit or just the sensor? The sensor is the little black box on top of the meter. This will have a Ford part # on it. If you remove one from another unit and the parts numbers are the same then it will work. This does not mean the meter will work though. The calibration is achieved by the size of the “air sample tube” size. The sample tube controls how much air is allowed to past over the heated wire. The temperature of the wire changes the resistance, which changes feedback voltage to the EEC. That helps determine injector pulse width. Also the Ford factory injectors are color-coded. The 19’s are orange.

    John,
    You didn't mention your year, and if you are converting to MAF. the stock injectors for the 5.0L HO are 19 lbs, the cobra is 24lbs. most other ford cars are around 14 lbs, (save for the police interceptors) If you are converting try this link. Lots of great information here very detailed down to right down to creating your own wiring harness (I have an 88 automatic GT and I am converting to MAF and got a 75mm MAF sensor from E-bay "100 bucks" and found that the 4 pin plug harness from a sensor on a taurus worked and I am getting an A9P computer)...... http://www.stangnet.com/tech/maf/massairconversion.html also

    Also I have found that most details specify that 88-93 had MAF, when in reality it is very late 88 (model change) or more appropriately 89-93. and the optimum box for an Auto is the A9P
    and for a stick you want the A9L.
