Bought some parts and these where part of the bundle. The numbers on the rods are C5FE-B No name i can see ,think there stock ford . Well i need them for a 84 302 and if there 65 289 rods there not going to work right because of stroke difference.

i would say you are correct .. the C5 is a 65 casting year .. doubt they were making 302 rods in 65 ..if they have 3/8th rod bolts i`d find a 289 crank and use them ( hi-po ) rods.. i have a couple hi-po rods left over from a bogus boss 302 build i did a thousand years ago that i will tell in car stories some day .. i p/md you a suggestion
I just did a rough tape measurement and there about 5.375 center to center. They have 3/8 ARP bolts installed.
someone may have to help us both then .. mine measure 5 .150 center to center .. mine are C3 year .. i know i later used them in a 289
IF those are ford casting codes.........
C = 1960
5 = ... 5 ie..1965
F = Outside USA, Trans Am racing
E = Engine
B = Basic number for an Connecting Rod
IF not ford number ???

Those are interesting rods. I can't find a C5FE-B rod number but those sort of look like the old C9ZE-G Boss 302 trans am rods. They were pretty beefy looking like those except those rod caps look a little different. I don't know the smallblock parts very well at all so I could be completely off base. But to me they look a little more than a std rod. Maybe some sort of hipo rod? Do you have a clear closeup of the casting number? I'll try to find out more in the meantime......unless someone can chime in.

FFR i do know that the original owner was a Drag racer . Also i got 2 complete sets of some Federal Mogul alum bearings called blue with it all ,they are date coded 10-72 . I drew a pic of the markings on the back side shows up better then pics . Rods are identical but markings are different and the size of C5FE-B casting is smaller on the rod with the 2 M marking .
I have a 1965 Mustang Hi-po 289 . I was looking at a book on the HI-PO 289 and they said . The HI-PO rods used part # C30Z-6200-C and a C3AE-D casting number . Later Ford used the Boss 302 rod C9ZZ-6200-B As a service replacement for the 289 HI-PO . They shared the same center-to-center lenght of 5.155 and have a weght of 581-593 grams. And both use the 3/8 inch bolts .

Jeff i think i seen that link before . FFR comes from long engine building if he gets stuck im in trouble . But i will try other sources if we get stuck . I do need to know what they are for.
Viking engine work is engine work no matter the preference . I've put together a couple chevys and they ran till i wanted something else . They where all stock rebuilds though .
LOL Well I'm stuck!!! I have one more person I can ask tho and I emailed him. I also posted a Q on the net54 smallblock forum. We'll find out what they are. Interesting they came from a drag racer. Should make a nice build with those.

These are the re-engineered late 65 early 66 289 HiPo rods Ford used to supply their race teams with. Not as rare as you might think, but not as common as the standard C3AE variety. Subtle differences that you can only see with a micrometer(sp), but differences that allowed the motor to sustain higher RPM's for a longer period of time under racing conditions.

That's pretty interesting Bill thanks. They sure don't look like your everyday smallblock production rods. But your right if they were experimental or prototype's they have the XK/SK number. Were these available over the counter to the average Joe or just for the race teams? I'm surprised there is not more info out there about them?? LOL.

Tango i did another tape and they are right at 5 .375 Maybe .010 or .020 less . I took one to work to do a accurate measure and forgot it in truck .
FFR and everyone Thank You for this assistance i dont have any books here yet but there on the list . I'll ask the guy but allmost for sure these rods have been bagged also since the 70s . I will say they are not light rods I think i know where a digital scale is that i can get it weighed at .
I went and did a weight on our digital home scale and they came in 1.9 pounds roughly .
Cammer speaking of that someone was mentioning one in a conversation but my mind seen 00K + so never retained info .
Here is reason i forgot to measure rod picked these up yesterday on the way to work . Repop but guy had them on a GT350 and said they fit good but he wanted some OEM. The price for 2 was a little less then if i ordered one and had it shipped .
Well I got a interesting email about those rods. The guy suspected they might be from the GT40 program. He once had come across a set of small block heads with a C5FE casting number. Not knowing exactly what they were he passed on them only to find out they were indeed race GT40 heads. I'm going to email Cushmans. They sell lots of the old Gurney Weslake DOHC stuff and I'll bet they'd know for sure. I'll report back.....
I think were onto something now.....the Cushman site sells lots of old race stuff from the Indy, GT40 and other race programs. Most of the part numbers are a C5FE, C5FF or XK prefix. Also under the Indy DOHC parts I see 2 boxes of the rod bearings you have!! FM bearings, aluminum, blue. The blue was more than likely the size of the bearings. The FE NASCAR rods came with either blue or red coded bearings depending on how tight or loose you'd want your clearances. I'd suspect the same deal here for yours. You should email him the pics and specs you have. It might be better if you speak with them directly. Here's their site....

FFR Thank You . I chased this all the way to a GT40 site and just woke with a possible answer that leads that way . Guy noted them as part number DOZX-6200-A - indy rod made for the 255 indy engine originally , boss 302 option/compitition . Thats the bearing boxes i have .
Again thanks i'll contact that site and see whats the pepper on these .
Jay from cush left a reply at gt40 . He says not to confuse them with the Boss rod they are the Indy 255 race engine rods (Foyt Coyote used this engine in the 60s). The bearings are as you said and very specific to them . They are some rare rods and bearings and having alum bearings i don't see to much street life out of them would you .
Found a Ford engine site . Its says there they used the 289 hi po rods to build the 255 indy engine so i think im back in the game . Now about the bearing thing that is the question . I need to chase down some specs on the 63-67 289 hi po rods to see if modern bearings work here .
Wow pretty cool! I knew those were something special the first time I saw the pics. I was able to find out your bearings are .75 thick and std rods use a .040 thick bearing.

Well heres the story in total . From Cushman Comp .
These are Indy 255 ci race rods . Bearings are specific to these as you mentioned FFR . They are 5.513 in length . They are set up for SBF with the rod journal but the pin size is .975 and sbf at .912 . The supply of needed bearings are a little rare and scarce . They come in heavy at being in the 700 g range though . He says this is to heavy for this type of build and will slow down revs . He offered me a set of Boss 302 rods and those also take a special bearing but are available . I think a $ amount has been reached hard to say if its a good one . Not too many people i believe would be looking for such a rare rod for its use .
Well that was a really cool story!! Glad you found a workable solution. They certainly are rare! And having the bearings and odd rod bolt socket to go with is nice! Did you take a pic of the rod bolts and the socket? I'm curious to see what they look like. Your right tho putting a price on those is difficult. Not a large following but I'm sure some guy building a Indy DOHC 225 will be pretty happy! I hope you did ok tho. Next time you go parts hunting I wanta go along!! :3dSMILE:

FFR scoring up some of the stuff it needs but no work as of yet. Working on my 67 Cpe to sell right now for some cash flow . Auto market is bad and dont want to use any savings if i don't have to .
Those cog gear design nuts will never strip its the aircraft quality i guess. I did put them out on Craigs list here locally going to see what market they have .
