Fellow offered to sell me a '95 cobra short block with new pistons, crank, & rods. story is the car had a turbo on it & it burned holes in two pistons which is why it was pulled & rebuilt.
does it make sense that the block would be ok after something like that? guy says the block was ok, just honed. he wants $450 for it.
does this sound right?
I'd look at it first.... Tell him you want to SEE the holes and look for cracks too.
it makes sense that a block "could" be ok after burning a hole in a piston. it can mess the block up also. i've replaced a lot of pistons and it worked out, but I've replaced a few blocks also. I'd have to know the people pretty good.
it sounds like the kind of situation where you would want to definitely look @ the block , and at the very LEAST see a dozen detailed pics thru email...
i'd want the block torn down, hot tanked and magnafluxed to see if its got cracks
Not sure someone will go through that trouble to sell a block though and show proof. If so then you might as well ask him to take you to dinner. :D If you got that lucky I would push the luck one more time, you never know!!! A nice steak? Hooters maybe?
If it's a short block, just rotate the crank around a couple laps, see how the cylinders look. Like Mike said, seen em come out of a piston crunch both ways. Don't know till you look at it.
