casting numbers

so today i was cleaning out the shed on my property from a bunch of junk that was here when i moved in and i amazingly found a 289 in there.... i was shocked, first thing i noticed were valve covers that say CS shelby on them, and then i saw a FoMoCo 4bbl carb..... the motor has all bracketing and everything on it, its amazing..... so i got the casting numbers to see if this is really a shelby motor.... here we go

I don't think that you can tell a Shelby motor by the castings as he took the stock cars and added his touch, it at the time may have been replacing a 260 with a 289 ( just an example ) but I belive he got stock engines from the ford plants themselves, probably in bulk, then he upped there HP with aftermarket parts, put on a set of Shelby covers and dropped it into a car, therefore his hopped up engines would retain the same castings as the stock engines. Take the valve covers off and see if there is a date mark on it, should be visible as to what year, also find castings. I'm not shure if he changed heads out to better one's or just used what came with the engines but if it has no date code, it's not a stock ford head but, that dosen't mean Shelby changed the heads ither. I'd put that in your Stang even if you have a better motor for it, the reason is, you clean that motor up, rebuild it, tune it up or whatever else also, clean and restore those valve covers and you could increase the value of the car because of the shelby name, not only that, the valve covers would give your car a higher apeal, cause not many people have even seen them.

cool thanks for the info.... still cool that i found a 4v 289 in my garage with all original hardware still on it..... after pulling off the valve covers, i could tell that its been sitting a very long time.... theres cobwebs in there and the oil looks like its completely dried up into very thick sludge.... and those shelby valve covers are probably worth something, but would look better on my mustang.... probably good for shelby cloning
