Dual Quad Tunnel Rammed 1986 5.0 HO
Oh, no, he's at it again.
Working on my second build.
What I have so far:
1986 5.0 HO long block (fell into one for pennies by a stroke of dumb luck)
No emissions (1978 Mustang II)
Weiand 289 dual-quad tunnel ram intake
Sync'd Holley 390 cfm vacuum-secondary carbs
Hedman headers to twin pipes with turbo mufflers
Duraspark ignition
(EDIT: Built C4 w/ shift kit)

I'm already running a built 302 with the dual-quad tunnel ram setup; that much works. I'm thinking to swap in a cam, bolt on the intake & carb towers, and drop the HO in. Cheap and nasty.

Questions:
- What cam?
- Keep the '86 HO heads (ported), or use the '66 289 Hi-Po heads I'm already running? (Buying new heads is not an option at this time.)
- Any idea what kind of flywheel peak HP this setup would generate? (I hate that question, too; but I can't find any reference to this idea anywhere. Maybe that should tell me something.)
- Will the mechanical fuel pump I'm running on my 302 be enough?Last edited by Was_II; 07-14-2005 at 10:25 PM.

That HO motor is more than likely to have roller cam ,big bonus,no cam break in.Also have that motor and I think its rated at like 225-240 hp stock,which is more than enuff to move a light mustange or the light mustange u have.Did u get the 5 speed too?Last edited by shawnlee28; 07-14-2005 at 09:37 AM.

Thanks, all. I was thinking that the 5.0 HO was a good deal. I'm thinking about the e303 cam.
That's a big negative on the 5-speed; I've got a built C4 with a B&M shift kit, though.

Okay, I can use the timing chain cover off the old SBF and the mechanical pump with it. Does anyone know if the e303 has the fuel pump eccentric?

Also if your thinking about putting that cam in a 86 block think again.
86 has flat top pistons and the valves will hit the piston.
Also throw away the 86 head as it was the biggest pile ford made.
If you want a stock head use a e-7 head and have it ported or port it yourself.
If you want to run a cam in a 86 motor then you will have to fly cut the pistons.
That's what you can do with the 86 heads. Use them as guides to cut the pistons then toss them.
You can find a set of GT-40 heads, not GT-40P, cheap and they are also a nice step up from stock.

Thanks, Eddie. I checked (and double-checked, and triple-checked just to be sure) the p/v clearance today with clay and a dial indicator. WOW, it's close: .006" without the head gasket in place. Tomorrow, I'm having a custom cam ground at Delta to accomodate the p/v clearance. New heads will come later, and a hotter cam and new pistons --and probably a .030 overbore -- with it.
Right now I'm doing junkyard builds -- bulding on the detritus from my father-in-law's hot rod club -- and going for max HP per $ -- as I'm still on the learning curve with all this. If this works, I'll be looking at ~250 rwhp with less than $2K from the word "Go." More importantly, I'll have done all the work myself short of the actual machining of the cam and flexplate (and enlisting the neighbor kid to help me muscle the engine out.) I know a set of Trickflows, a T-5, an X-cam, and some KB pistons would do it, but I just can't -- at this point in my learning curve -- justify buying hi-dollar, hi-performance parts from a catalogue. Someday, just not now. I'm trying to keep my "hot-roddin' education" affordable, and wringing the most power that I can out of whatever I'm able to scrounge is the best way for me to figure out what makes the car go, IMO. (EDIT: I just today learned how the cam actually works; it didn't make any sense until I tore the thing completely down and was holding it in my hands.)
Thanks for the heads-up on the E7's.
I ported the crap out of the E6's last week -- matched them to the intake and to the headers. FWIW, the GT-40 heads won't fit any headers made for a Mustang II. And I just can't see throwing down the green to have custom headers made. When it comes time to throw down that kind of money, I'll also be hunting down a '38 or '39 coupe body to put it all in.
Until then, this puppy will scoot along nicely enough with the tweaked, dual-quad '86.

Glade I could help some.
FYI the gt-40 heads use the same header as any 302 so theywill work fine.
The gt-40p heads came on 95 up expolrers with 5.0, they are the ones that use different headers.
If you are going to put a cam in the 86 motor at least make sure you upgrade the springs alittle.
One over rev with some valve float and your touching a piston.
Actually the 86 cam workes the best of all stock cams.
I would just leave it in there and spend the extra money saved on something else.

Are you absolutely sure that the engine is HO? If it is it will have the 351 firing order and those flattops are forged. I have seen where someone was running an E303 in that block and he did leave some marks on the pistons. A few more rpms and it may have detonated. A lot of the HO engines out there are really just the 86 and newer roller 302 for passenger cars. You can make it an HO with pistons and cam though. The 96 Explorer came with GT40 heads and the 97 up came with the GT40P heads on the 5.0's. You can make a lot of hp with E7TE heads with port and polish work and a thinner head gasket to bump the compression a tad. You can do it with about a .500" lift too, not necessary to go much more for the street.sixty clicks West of Chu Lai

It most definitely is an H.O.; it has the 351W firing order and the flat-top pistons. I heard yes and no on the E303 so many times that I finally had a custom cam ground for it, .471/.441, I forget the duration but Delta Camshafts opened up the intake duration considerably. It goes like a sum-bish and has a fairly aggressive idle. It's just mean. Roller cams are COOL.
It's an intimidation build; the whole point is to scare the bejeezus out of the kids in their Hondas at the university at the bottom of my hill. Mission, as they say, accomplished.

I am using an 86 pass car block the B303 cam and some speed pro hypers with two reliefs and 1.7rrockers. I ported the GT40P heads and polished the valves cc and exhaust. It has a lumpy idle for the intimidation factor. Pumped aod with 4.11's in a 64 Fairlane. scoots pretty good down here in TacoMa.sixty clicks West of Chu Lai

And seriously, I can't overemphasize what happened in my head when I got the engine torn completely down, and stepped back and looked -- really looked -- at it: "This goes up and down, this turns this, this pushes these. . . ." from the gas going bang to the wheels turning, I could visualize it all. Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
