What year Explorer had GT40 heads?

I am in the very early stages of planning to build a hot rod. I am still not sure if I will start with a roller chassis or go the kit route.

One thing I am sure of is that I will want to run a carbureted SB Ford with a 5 speed, so I may begin the project by searching for an engine.

I have heard that certain Explorers came with a 5.0 with the GT40 heads. What years were so equipped? It seems that this would be a good starting point for a "budget" engine.

What kind of power could I expect with this engine and a E303 cam?
What about a 347 stroker kit and E303 (or is there a better cam choice for the stroker)?

I believe that its to 97 1/2 that the explorers had the unmilled GT40 heads on them, your 347 will work with the e303 cam, but if i remeber correctly thats their smog legal cam which is not going to give you the big power numbers if your looking to stay with Ford Racing stuff i think is a B303 or something by Trick Flow for a cam would probally work out better for power production, with a 347 with those cams and GT40 heads i would guess at a conservative 275-300 HP

The 96 Explorers had the GT40 heads. The 97 to 01 Explorers have GT40P heads.

What is the difference between the production GT40 and GT40P heads, as well as the aftermarket GT40 heads?

. The gt40 and gt40p are almost identical performance wise. The exhaust ports are shaped differently on the p heads thus requiring a differently header
