I have a friend that is selling a 427 side oiler. He claims it is a holman & moody engine. It has the tunnel port heads and intake and it is in runnign condition. What would something like this be worth. He has no documentation as far as being owned by Holman and Moody. I am thinking about buying it but i don't know what its worth. I came out of a 67 farilane drag car that he bought. Any information would be helpful.

Call Barry Robotnick at Survival Motorsports. He is a master with FE fords. A real sideoiler from 66 / 67 is very pricey! I sold a couple crappy ones for 2K each. If he can prove they're from H-M, they could be almost priceless. You can still contact H-M too, they have odd ball office hours but you can reach them. A tunnel port 427 has only one purpose and that's turning high rpm! Forget about adapting it to the street! It's a race only piece, but damn I'd love to have it! Hint Hint!
If it's a real side oiler with tunnel port heads, then the seller can pretty much ask what he wants for the engine and wait for the right buyer to step up!!!! Whether or not it came from Holman Moody doesn't mean much unless the seller had a ton of documentation with the history of the engine, what it was in, the build specs for the engine, etc. I've only seen one genuine Holman-Moody built engine, it had a serial number on the block and most of the other parts, along with the blueprint sheet from the original build. Without anything like that, the Holman Moody story doesn't do anything for the value....
If it's a complete side oiler with tunnel port heads in running condition, IMO $10K would be a bargain!!!!!
He has no documentation on the HM. I cannot find any casting number anywhere on the block. It is complete from dual 4 carbs to oil pan. He said he would take $12000 for it. It really looks nice. It has 68 heads with very large valve, I don't have an exact measurement on them though. I plan on pulling the heads off to look at them better. Is it worth $12000 i might be able to talk him down to $10K. What do you think.
I had new a 1964 427 medium riser dual quad in a Galaxy 500.I am amaze how expensive these engines have gotten.It sure would buzz up to 7,000 no problem.
Yeah, if it's everything you say here it's worth $12K! Like I said $10 would be a bargain!

Post them, take pictures of the exhaust ports and post it all here. It could be worth $6,000 it could be worth $20,000 it all depends on the casting numbers and internals. Right now, with no receipts, I'm thinking more on the low side. As for the connection with HM, there would be stampings in the rear pad just below the heads on the drivers side. If there are stampings there, post them for confirmation, otherwise, forget about added value for something that cannot be proven.

I am going to pull it all apart and take some good pictures either this weekend or next. I will check out all the locations for the casting numbers again. I think the lowest he will go is $10K or 11K. If its worth it i will pick it up. If there is any more information to look for let me know.

Does the pushrod go thru a tube in the middle of the intake port???
Many ford parts came from HM---they were the source for the good stuff back then--Now if you had the fairlane also$$$$$$$$$$
He is keeping the fairlane. He pulled this engine out and put a 385 series engine in i think it is a 460. The lowest he will go is $12k. I will have to check this weekend on the pushrod, if it goes through a tube or not.
A high school buddies dad had race connections, and was able to purchase a tunnel port engine back when nobody could purchase a tunnel port engine. it was put in my buddies street 57 Ford with a top loader. man that thing was an animal. you could throw a tennis ball down those ports. ahh the good ol days.

Where are the casting numbers on the 427 tunnel port engine block to determine if it is an X block. Yes it has the pushrods going through the intake port. Is there any other casting numbers to look for. I want to k now of all th epossible locations.

doesn't matter where the numbers are or aren't unless your doing a restore of some particular year car---if the push rods are thru a tube thru middle of intake port, you got the real thing---
does the distributor have dual points???

Here are the pictures of the engine. Tell me what you guys think. He is asking $12K, is it worth it. it is a standard bore 4.23 427 side oiler. here are the casting numbers. Heads C70E 6090K, Intake C70E 9425-A, Top of piston SK-37015MOD, bottom side of piston C8AX 6110A, Block by the oil filter area the date is hard to tell but it looks like 6A13, The back of the block has 66-427, The crank is C4AEB, The rods C6AE-E they also have 39 over B3, The carbs tag has series C3AE Type CA Date B, on the back of the horn has 314 C3AE-9510-C List 2652-1. The block has no other casting marks other than the date and the 66-427 on the back. The block on the side looks like a rough casting or maybe a weld, its hard to say there is nothing on the inside though it is only in the outside of the block I need to take a freeze plug out to determine for sure though. What rods are in this are they lemans or what? The #8 piston has had something hit it. the hole around the spark plug in the combustion chamber has a little area from this as well. Take a look at the pics. Is it worth $12 K or not if not what is the current value.i'll post some more pics

Not quite in running condition as it was advertised, for sure!!!! For sure one piston maybe more, probably some serious head work, and some block machining that will hopefully clean up the head surfaces. Plus if there's any surprises in the bottom end.... Nope, not worth the $12K needing all that work.
Guys at this point maybe a more important question is what is it worth considering what we are seeing.I have been out of Fords for too long to say.
I would definatley look very closely at the bore the hammered piston is in along with the combustion chamber of the head.
I would say the welded looking area was a factory repair to save a block with a casting flaw. I've come across repairs like this on other engines and castings (manifolds etc). Would it make a difference in the value......probably not.
What are your plans for the engine if you do buy it?
If you could prove the Holman Moody connection, then maybe. Otherwise, no way!
