engine id help

Howdy,
I am working on restoring an old pickup and am having a few problems id'ing the motor in it. My uncle had this truck before me and he swears up and down that the motor is a Ford 390. He said that he pulled it out of his mom's old station wagon when he was in high school. I believed him at first but now after researching am having some doubts.
here are some numbers off of it:
timing cover: C8AE-6059-B
Intake manifold: C9AE9425-B
heads between the center spark plugs: C8AE-H

going off the numbers off the heads one site online told me that it might be a '68 427. I have no idea. any thoughts?

Lot of Ford guys here, but I found out a little information. These heads show to be 360,390 or maybe just maybe 428. I do not believe they are 427 Heads.

These casting number heads were used in all three of these motors. If they were on a 428 then they will have 14 bolt exhaust mounting surface.

ok i see what you mean. i havnt pulled off the exhaust manifolds yet. but i guess the only reall way to see what it is would be to pull the plugs and check the stroke or pull the heads off

Checking the bore and stroke is the most accurate way to determine what the engine is...the Ford part number system in the FE days was a bit less then definitive, to say the least!

Yes, Check the bore & stroke. 427s had cross bolt mains. (And about half of the 406s). Looking at the block for cross bolts will tell you if you've got a 427. (Well give you a good clue, as they can be added to any FE nowadays). What's the casting number on the block? Screw in or press in freeze plugs?
