    (increased torque & horsepower and reduced fuel consumption compared to single plane) Intermittent Gross Output : BHP 246 @ 3200 RPM , Torque 461 lbs-ft @ 2400 RPM , Continuous Gross Output : BHP 205 @ 3000 RPM , Torque 393 lbs-ft @ 2400 RPM. Specific Fuel Consumption : 0.50 @ 2400 RPM , 0.52 @ 3000 RPM , 0.54 @ 3200 RPM , lbs/BHP-HR , 83M/91R Octane. compression ratio : 7.3 to 1. Dimensions : length 35.5 in fan to rear block face , width 34 in across exhaust manifolds , height 35.75 top of carb to bottom of oil pan.     ID'ing a 534 Ford V8

     



    I'm told that the engine in my 1963 Walter is a 534 Ford. The 534 plugs I bought from NAPA fit it. How do I tell it from a 401 or 477? I'd like to make sure of the exact displacement.

    The 534 is the only Super Duty with a 4.20 stroke - the 401 and 477 have a 3.75 stroke. You could remove a spark plug, turn the engine over with the ignition coil wire removed ( so it doesnt start ), turn it over until the piston is at top dead center, insert a long narrow rod ( such as a spare pushrod ) into the plug hole, mark on the rod with a grease pencil how far it extends into the hole at top dead center. Turn the engine over until the piston is at bottom dead center, reinsert the rod, mark it again, measure the distance between the marks. Be sure the rod is clean and plenty long enough.
