    Hey all.

    The other day I noticed the butterflies were not opening all the way on my dad's FE 427 carburetor. This is the same motor that was bending push rods earlier, oil restrictors were installed and the problem seems to have gone away.

    Which leads me to my question, what reasoning caused the speed shop to adjust the carburetor linkage to where at full throttle the primaries are 7/8 open and the secondaries under 3/4 open? (Barry Grant Claw Silver Series 750 mechanical secondaries, double pumper) did the mechanics do this to limit power to not bend the push rods? Sounds to me, if that's the case, they pulled a fast one on us.

    Great now I am even more confused! I remember oil relief valves in the back of the block being mentioned. Could the idiots not utilized those valves to reduce the hydro lock on the push rods? Were the push rods bending because of the oil pressure? (100-110psi cold)

    Fix the carb Links so they work right . And install some thicker wall push rods . That should fix things .

    Reset it, open the carb to full open (if it does), readjust the rod, and see if it closes all the way. If it does your good to go, if it does not, you'll have to check the lever length, or check the carpet under the gas pedal, to start.

    Hey Denny,

    If I adjust the oil pressure relief valve, will I have to remove the oil restrictors? What is the normal oil pressure for a FE Ford? Does she follow the 10psi per 1000rpm rule?

    Your Bent Pushrods have nothing to do with your Oil Pressure .

    Thanks for the advice guys. The original engine builder did a very odd job assembling the motor (i.e. cylinders were different sizes, and some even oval) I will see if I can get into the motor and make the recommended adjustments.

    Its motors like this that really make me lust after building my own motor finally because it is common sense to check the lifter, push rod, lifter tolerances and make sure they line up! If you are bending big ol' after market big block push rods something is definitely wrong.

    Do you think the carburetor jets will have to be changed as the mains were probably tuned with the butterflies not fully open as previously mentioned? Only one way to find out...

    427's except for the 68 has a mech. camwith adjustable rocker arms. do you have the valves adjusted correct? do you have a mach.gage on the engine?
