a what?...400modified ??
I found a FE on craigs list today, and I got it for $50. The guys i got it from said they got it from an F150 that they bought for the suspension. They said that they were told by the guy they got the truck from that it was a "400 modified FE". They said that they thought it may be a "68 390FE, so I bought it because it had a water pump and oil filter assembly and other stuff i need. The block says "352" so I'm sure they'll fit (I hope), and if it does turn out to be a 390, it will save me a bunch of money on rods and crank when I rebuild my 360. The heads look different too. I cant read any of the other block or head numbers tonite with all the grease and dirt on it, so I'll tare it down tomorrow and find out what it is maybe. heres the pic from his CsL add.

they said they destroyed the 4-speed manual trans trying to take it off, and sold it for scrap along with the ford rear end that I could have used. Oh well.
is there a such thing as a 400FE mod? or would that be a 390 bored 60 over or something?

Somebody was hallucinating!!!! There's FE's and FT's--
The truck 4 speeds are good for little more then scrap price, no loss there. Lost a 9" rear, that bites!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Learning must be difficult for those who already know it all!!!!

not an m
Its not a 400M or 351M. Looks like a 352, especially if you said it has a tag that said 352. I am no expert on telling the difference between 352 and 390, I think the bell housing is the only difference by looking? The 390 and 360 has a rounded bell housing, the 352/428 have a bell housing simmilar to the regular ford big blocks like the 351M/400M/429/460.

It's an FE, all right. All FE's use the same bell pattern. 390's say "352" on the side, many FE's do. Pull the engine apart and check it out, it is a better start than your 360. If the 390 block is shot, all the internals will fit your 360 block and make it a 390.

hmmmm....Just another 360 truck engine. 360 pistons and rods and crank. didnt have my 390 rods and crank I needed. Got a manual flywheel and clutch, water pump, fuel pump, fan, oil filter assembly, balancer, and brackets off front. might be able to clean them up to use for my 360. rest of block, heads, and internals are going to the scrap yard in the morning.
one thing though...the back of the block says "352A" and a mold number under that. I read something about extra letters on the back of the block somewhere, but cant remember. Does the "A" mean something, or just nothing inportant?

Amazing how that "6" in 360 flips upside down when it's time to sell....

most of the fe blocks casted have 352 on the block it has nothing to do with beong a 352. every 428 i have built had 352 cast in the block.all 427's have cross bolt mains and some of the 406 had cross bolt mains.and if you have screw on tags it means you have a rebuilt engine.if the intake dose not fit it needs to be milled to fit the heads.any time i have heads milled i alway have the intake milled also.
all fe bellhousing are the same bolt pattern,351-clevelands use the small block bell housing(302),the 351m,400m,429/460 all use the same bell housing.Last edited by hotrodstude; 07-08-2009 at 06:43 PM.
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
