Help me with Engine ID please : )

I recently purchased a Torino and am having problems with the starter motor. At first it was believed to be the wrong motor, seeing how the engine was supposedly a 460 lincoln, and had a 429 starter motor in it. now that i have had the 460 starter motor in it and have run it about 12 times, the teeth are ground off of the starter motor gear. I was able to pull some numbers off of the block directly over where the starter goes into the bell housing... those numbers were DIVE-A2B (or maybe D1VE-A2B). Can you please help me to identify what engine this actually is, and year if possible by these numbers?

Should be a 429 motor not a 460. Usually known as a Police Interceptor motor as it was used as the base motor in the police specials of that time period.

so do you happen to know what year this would make it? The tag in between the 3&4 cillinder read -3A22 if this helps any.

D1 connotates 1971

D=1970's 1=the specific year in this case 1971, V= Lincoln make E= engine or equipment

Yet another casting has been found on my engine... inbetween two cillinders on the rail (not under the valve cover) above the exaust ports i found the casting numbers: D3VE-A2A... Also i found the number 101 next to the oil filter... Does this mean anything?

Also it was quite common to use several different years parts on the same engine. So far all of the numbers you have provided are early 70's and the -a2a is just what version of that casting for that year. It's pretty simple to follow the codes. Pull off the oil pan and look at the crank numbers. This will definately tell you wether this is a 429 or 460.
Can you get the oil pan off to look at the casting number on the crank?
For a 429 it 4U or 4UA. An early 460 is 2Y or 2YA or anything with 2Y.

well, i would rather not take off the oil pan untill i am in need of an oil change. when i need one i will have to take a look where you are saying so i can be sure of what i have, i wish that there were an easier way to find out.
