FE heads
ok i got a pair of C3AE-6090C, 3E8 & 3E15 heads coming, i take it these heads are identical to the 406 heads with the exception of spring seat cups because they are early date heads.
so i take that they have 56.4-61.0 cc.chambers and 2.02 intake and 1.66 exhaust valves with 2.34 x1.34 intake ports.
so help me out here if im wrong on my info,,thanks

Hey I can't find any matching numbers, what are the heads supposed to be off of? Clarify engine, so that I know what I am lookin' for. I'm showing different chamber sizes for the 406, which is what I'm lookin under' and that was only made for 2 years, 1962 and 1963. I dont understand what you need to know.
This is what I have 62/63 406 heads.
72.8 to 75.8 for the chamber sizes. The exhaust valve is a 1.66, the intake valve is 2.09.
Port sizes: width(I) is 1.34, hieght(I) is 1.93.
width(E) is 1.28, hieght(E) is 1.84.
I'm not showing a part number for the 406 head, but it should start out C2 or C3.
What are the heads coming off of? I know the year is a 63. But thats all that I can tell. If you tell me what engine they are Off of then I can get the valve and combustion chamber sizes.

this is a 63' t-bird 390 4v,and the book i have says these heads are of the same build as the 406 with the exception of spring seat cups which are on late 406, i am wanting to verify that this what i am buying,

These are 63' 390 heads right? Okay, 1960 to 1965 chamber size: 68.1 to 71.1, exhaust valve:1.57, intake valve: 2.04, the
width(I): 1.34, hieght(I): 1.93.
width(E): 1.28, hieght(E): 1.84.
Now, this is all on these years 1960 to 1962, 352/390 special engines had a different hieght port size:
hieght(I): 234, the rest of the sizes are the same as the other 390's.
You need to get this book, it's called FORD PERFORMANCE the revised edition. This book is written by Pat Ganahl. From what I'm reading some of these heads have problems with some of the intake manifolds. Some of them you cannot use a medium or high rise intake manifold with. This is pretty confusing stuff and I don't wanna tell you the wrong thing. You can already see that the cylinder sizes are different, now they say physically that the 332/352/390/and a standard 428 head used exactley same valve sizes, 2.04 intake, and a 1.57 inch exhaust. Any of these heads will retrofit. To install them onto a 406 or the 428 you will have to chamfer the tops of the cylinders for valve clearance, according to Ford information the heads should not be used on a 390, because too large a notch would have to be cut into the cylinders. So, hopefully you see what I'm saying: you need to get this book and see for yourself and make your own decision. It gets very confusing when you start talking about 390's, 352's, and special 390's. There's a lot of different heads here that will bolt up but, you start having clearance and intake manifold problems where the ports won't match up. Sorry I can't be more help, but, Get the book! Hope this helps a little bit anyway.

Okay, I think what your trying to do is put a set of 406 heads on a 390 engine, am I right?? According to this these 406 heads shouldn't be used on the 390 because, too large a notch would have to be cut into the cylinder. A better choise would be the 428 Cobra jet heads. And they DEFINATLY won't go onto a 352 block. So, if your buying 406 heads to go on a 390 engine the book says not to do it.

the block im going to put these heads on is a 390 block i had bored to 4.110 or .060 over, i have the book from Steve Christ that i am comparing these numbers to, so if the info is correct then these should fit on my block with no problems. this book has these casting numbers as 56.4-61.0 cc with 2.02 intake and 1.66 exhaust and port size of 2.34x1.34 on intake and says that late 406 has spring seat cups ,so i am taking it that since these are cast in the month of may, that they will not have the seat cups but all other specs are the same, this is what im seeking

Well I'm showing a bigger intake than what you are saying on the 406 head,if that is the 406 head. I'm showing a 2.09 intake valve. Where does the 2.02 intake valve come in? My book only shows to 1970 for these big blocks. And I only show the 406 being made for 2 years: 1962 and 1963. And I don't see any variation on the intake valve sizes, thats why I'm wondering where you got the 2.02, are you sure its a 406 head?

3e8 is 1963 may 8th,,and 3e15 is 1963 may 15 date codes,
C3AE 6090C are the castings

Ok I didn't know what the numbers were with out the letter C in front of it to tell me, what decade it was. Of course I know the C is for the sixtys, the D for the seventys and so on But what about valve size, I'm not showing a 2.02 intake valve for the 406 I'm showing a Intake valve of 2.09 for 1962 and 1963 yearsLast edited by vara4; 01-11-2004 at 03:00 PM.

Ok now I know how streets feels when he doesn't get a reply,now Ripped again's got me curious wheather or not there was a 2.02 Intake valve in a 1962 or a 1963 ford 406 head.
anybody else got some information on these heads. please help before I end up like some of the other guy's around here, [CRAZY.]Thanks

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
