I wanted to know more about this engine . I think Denny runs one . I did know a guy that had a 66 Mercury with a 410 . Is this a 390FE with a 428 crank ? Was it only used in Mercurys . In one book its listed at 330HP 444 ft.lbs torque . Did it use good rods and a forged crank ? I use to work on 391FE 4BBL truck engines . Man that intake was like :CRY: 100lbs .
Yep 390 4.05 bore with a 3.98 428 crank. 66-67 Mercs had them. Used std forged FE rods and the 428 cranks are nodular iron not forged steel. It's rumored some pickups came with them as an unknown option. I've never seen one personally. The 410 pistons were used in the pickup 390's tho. With a higher wrist pin location this was a solution to getting a low compression truck engine without new piston tooling. Denny is the resident 410 expert. I'm sure he'll tell ya more!
The 391 Ford truck engine . Is that a 390FE . One of the 391s that I changed out had a 352cast in the front of the block . At the time I had a boss that ran a 406FE and he said that was on his block also . The engine that I was installing in the truck . Had paper work that said it was bored 60 over and the crank was 020/020 . That engine also had a 600 Holley from the factory . It had the cool valve covers that said powered by ford . And for a big F600 it was fast .
DENNY did the 422 in your hot rod start out as a 410 ?
I think the 410 was also in some Edsels and Mercury Marrauders in 58-60.
Denny W What heads do you run on that 422 ? And what size are the valves ? Are they ported out ? Have you ever ran that 34 Chevy at the track . Do you run a Ford C6 and 9in rear end in your 34 ? Real COOL set up I like it . :cool:
391 was a FT engine. But based on the 390 4.05 bore block. It used a 3.794 stroke forged steel crank with a larger snout dia than the std FE cranks. Heads had big chambers with small valves with the heat crossover in the center not offset like the FE's. I've only seen a few different foundry identifiers. 352 and the reverse 105. All of the old 406's I had did not have the 352 on the upper left part of the block. They had "HP" on the side and rear of the block. And by the cam and crank saddles on the inside. I have seen a few builders that stamped the CID on the outside of the block. But nothing like that from the factory that I've seen cast in. And I sure have not seen it all some 30 years later. New things pop up all the time on these old engines.
That is what the # was 352 . It was on the front of the block . I was thinking 361 because we had some 361 Ford engines with 2BBLs . Do guy build the 391s for racing ? And can you use the FE heads on the 391 . Thanks for the info .
I Like the C6 trans . But we had two at work on E350s that the tail housing cracked by the mounting area . And I check the engine mounts they were ok . I think you can buy a cast iron on that was used on some big block Mustangs and F600 trucks . But the C6 is a real good trans .
See if you can find one of the cast iron C6 tails . That Mustang 67 guy might know were you can get one .Quote:

The 410 that was in the edsels back then was called an E475 that made 475 torque at some very low rpm
It was a member of the MEL series that also included the 383 mercury and 430 lincoln
The combustion chambers were in the block like the 409 chevs with the head being flat
Had one in a 55 ford that I later put in my 59 ford 2 door ex deptment of agriculture biz coupe with a 4 speed from a 62---was never beat with it, ran it in A/mp as I could run slicks in that class
I saw an Edsel setting on a trailer last night, think I'll go look at it after while---

Till what year did Lincoln use that 430 ? I think there is one in a junk yard near me . I want to say its a 1962 . Is the 430s a powerful engine ?

The MEL 410 in the Edsels had a 4.20 bore where the FE's had the 4.05 bore. Wikipedia has some good info
