Is that a Holley made for ford? sounds like it. If it is, yes it can be tuned for your set up. A lot of Ford junkies here to jump in the mix and help guide you. When they do, Please be willing to supply some more specifics. You will be much happier.

the carb is off of a 65 LTD "X" code, 352 automatic car.

the engine cost the original builder 20K plus. I got it in a trade. It puts out some HP, I have not dyno'ed it yet, but I will as soon as I get it totally road ready. I have a 750 dbl pumper on it now that has been reworked somehow. That process cost the original owner as much as the carb cost new. I think it may be overkill.

The car has 3.50 gears in it, as it was a 289 car when I got it. would higher or lower gears get me better fuel mileage?

The FMX may have to be rebuilt, it takes a while to go into gear.

PS, where can I get front strut rod bushings etc for this 662doorgalaxie?

strut rod bushings??? not on a '62 Galaxie. www.dearbornclassics.com has just about every suspension peice made for Galaxie's, you'll find what your looking for

IT'S THE ROD THAT COMES DIAGOnally from the control arm? to the front crossmember. it's a 66... 2door there are 4 of these bushings, 2 on each rod, the look like small donuts.

A $20 thousand dollar 390? Am I reading that right? What all has been done to it and who built it? Must be one sweet 390 for that kind of cash!!

it is sweet for sure. I have not seen the build sheet but only the best parts were used according to the previous owner. He saw the build sheet, the guy he got the engine from about died after he traded off the engine for labor, PREVIOUS TO SEEING THE BUILD SHEET!!

I may have already messed up my FX trans. with this powerhouse.

its hard for me to believe that an FMX could be damaged by a 390 unless its putting out well over 1000HP...... fmx's are indestructable.... my buddy has a pantera running a 351C and an FMX, car is dynoed in at 700hp and hes put about 45k on it with that fmx and it hasn't missed a turn......

the gearing would change your gas mileage either way depending on what size tires you're running.... if you running 35" tires then a 4.90 gear would bring you gas mileage back up, but if you're running say... 185/70/13 then you would want to run like a 2.73 gear to get your gas mileage up.... pretty standard tire for a 65 galaxie would be like a 235/70/15.... which you would want about a 3.25-3.50 gear for optimal gas mileage

thanks for all of the replies. I have not been able to drive it, as it in is my barn surrounded by MUD!!! I'll take it out tomorrow and check the shifting again.

I had it out for a 60 mile cruise and the next morning it would not go into drive, so I moved the selector back to reverse and it worked, back to drive and it worked as well. (although the was a 5-10 second time gap)

I had fiddled with the linkage when the engine was too far forward, and forgot to readjust it when I got the engine in it's proper place.

I may have damaged the trans by the linkage not allowing the transmission to be completely in gear. (between gears) But it ran like a scalded dog.

If it's just the linkage not allowing it to go into gear, I doubt it hurt the trans at all. Like others said, FMX's are tough. They are heavy, and have some issues when it comes to hi-po driving, but they're great for street use.
