thanks for all of the replies. I have not been able to drive it, as it in is my barn surrounded by MUD!!! I'll take it out tomorrow and check the shifting again.

I had it out for a 60 mile cruise and the next morning it would not go into drive, so I moved the selector back to reverse and it worked, back to drive and it worked as well. (although the was a 5-10 second time gap)

I had fiddled with the linkage when the engine was too far forward, and forgot to readjust it when I got the engine in it's proper place.

I may have damaged the trans by the linkage not allowing the transmission to be completely in gear. (between gears) But it ran like a scalded dog.
