an overflow tank is imo a neccisary thing on any car.... cooling is something that should never be compromised even if it doesn't have a cooling problem
www.dearbornclassics.com sells surge tanks, reproduction, but factory original on 406 cars.
i personally like the stainless steel tube style ones you can get from summit, they look clean and can right down the side of your radiator
ohh i have an overflow tank on the car i just thought you were talking about those weird ford ones i have one from the parts store...i made sure i bought the bigger one.
those are diffrent than the surge tanks. this is a surge tank, repro that dearborn classics sells http://www.dearbornclassics.com/images/sgr61a.jpgQuote:

yah my 65 didnt come with one....what exactly are they for? does it replace the overflow tank? i have seen them a lot on older 64 and later galaxies but never really paid them any mind
this particular part # is listed for '61- '64 Galaxie, I'm pretty shure that '64 was the last year for them. ither way, the '62 406 would have had 1. it does not replace overflow, it increases cooling capicity, and is preassurized with a cap.
It's a surge tank, not an overflow tank. I believe Matt is right in that '64 was the last year for them. However, for whatever reason the FE engines always worked best with the surge tank. I'd go ahead and put one on your '65 if you can find one Tyler. Heck, I ran one on my '66 pickup with a 428 CJ engine for a couple years with no cooling problems. Maybe G or somebody can explain to both of us why the FE's work better with the surge tanks. I don't know why they work better, just that they do!!!!!
I have a 65 tank. C5ME-8A080-A. I forget what it's off of but I think a Merc or something. The tank is setup for right (pass) side rad hose. They came both right and left so check which you need. You can also take it apart and turn the tank around and re-solder if needed. There are tons of them used on ebay in the $30+ range. Problem is most leak....some still leak after they have been repaired. The Ford one's are brass and look VERY cool polished. There are new stainless aftermarkets for $99 some Tbird parts guys sells on ebay. I might be parting with mine. But I'm not positive yet. It was for the Cobra but never used. The neck needed to be shortened to fit under the hood. It's been pressure tested, brass tank and neck polished and the brackets painted gloss black. THEN I discovered it needed to be shorter....LOL. :3dSMILE:
