looking for a weird thermostat housing

ok as you all know i have the 3X2 intake on the galaxie.....well on that intake thhere is no place to screw in a sending unit for the temp gauge. i was looking at some pistures of the motor from when it was in the fairlane and the temp sending unit was screw into the thermostat housing where can i find one of these?

NAPA or carquest can get them. a standard FE water neck should work, and I know in the 70's Ford started putting this provision in the water necks. prolly asking for the water neck for a 1974 Ford 390 would get you what you needed. possibly even just ask for a '62 406, and you may get it. I got a new water neck for my 200 I6, asking for a '67 200 I6 water neck, I got 1 with that provision, stock original, did not have it

I got one from O'rielly's, They had a catalog to pick from and i got the temp sensor to turn my fans on, while I was there.

the one i have on there now has no provision for the temp gauge i havent really looked that hard but i guess i can go to the local parts store and try to find one i went to advance and they dont list a 406. i guess i will take a ride around to all the stores haha

go to NAPA or carquest, never Advance or Autozone. I had a girl from advance tell me my car ( '67 Falcon ) did not exist, because it was not in the computer. All I wanted was brake bleeders. told her '66 Mustang, they were on order for the next day

Tyler are you sure there is no place to screw in a temp sensor? There was one in mine. Maybe there is a plug in it. Mine had one hole for the heater elbow and one for the temp sensor.

mine has one for the stock sensor behind the dist. but all of the gauges i have found wont work bc that hole is too small but its all good now i found one at the local FAMILY OWNED parts store........God bless small business

Tyler I think you need to do a little re-look and a re-think on the temp sender in the thermostat housing.

I'm building an FE powered (with 63 T Bird Tri-Power intake) in a 64 custom.

The hole behind the distributor looks small .....it's 1/4" NPT, but every aftermarket guage set I have has an adaptor that does fit it.

The problem with running the temp sender in the thermostat housing is that it only reads the water temp AFTER the thermostat has opened. Unless your running a fail safe thermostat, most normal thermostats fail in the closed position 99% of the time. In other words your engine can be toast before the temp guage even registers.

i agree, you'd be better off running an adapter for it to put it into the manifold.... the thermostat housing really is best for the old smog stuff to screw into.... the vac trees with the thermal diaphrams and such

im not running a thermostat in the car right now...i put a 160 degree in and the motor overheated. i tried to screw the temp sending unit into the intake where the 1/4 hole is and the probe for my sending unit wont fit in the hole. the hole looks to be off center and just kinda disformed its really weird i will try to get some pictures but there is a small plug in it as of now

if your motor overheated with a thermostat, it's because it had air in the system. drill an air bleed hole in a new 180* Tstat to cure that.

Are you still running the expansion tank??? For whatever reason they seem to be essential to get an FE to cool......

no not currently but it hasnt been overheating. i need to buy one but with the way my fan sits in there it might be hard to fit in

shouldn't be..... the hose is pretty narrow and you can mount it wherever you have space..... just route the hose safely

im gonna start looking for one but so far it hasnt been overheating it was 80 the other day and i had it just sitting there running and it stays pretty cool, but im still gonna buy one just in case i need it.
