well i just got my new motor and i was trying to look at the casting numbers but i cant figure out how to read it everything on the web pages i went on has the 406 listed as being C2AE-J my casting number is C2AE6015J i cant figure out what the 6015 means also the casting numbers on the heads are
C2SE and next to it is 3090B i just wanted to make sure these are 406 heads. hopefully as soon as i find my camera ill get some pictures up.

Tyler most book and net listings leave out the 6015 number. That is Fords number for a production engine block. So C2AE-6015-J is the correct number for a 62 406 block. The heads are also 406 heads. The number is 6090 and that is the same deal as the block number...just for heads. So everything is fine there. You should also see a "HP" cast on the side and back of the block.

yah there is an HP there on the side what does that mean? also i noticed that there is no '352' or backwards '501' stamped into the lifter valley
HP= High-Performance. Yep the early blocks didn't have the "352" identifier. None of the 406 blocks I've ever had has had that. The reverse "105" blocks are all MCC (Michigan casting center) castings starting in the early 70's. Your 406 block was cast at Dearborn (DIF) and to me are some of the best cast blocks I've ever seen. If you ever tear the engine down I'd be interested to know how thick the cyl walls are. Being the 406 was the test mule for the 427 some of those blocks did have thicker 427 wall cores cast into them. Your may or may not have the crossbolt bosses. Whats the date code off the block? It's above the oil filter adapter on the side of the block. In 64 Ford moved the DC location to below the fliter pad.

im at school right now but i will get the date code when i get home i have the oil pan and heads off of the motor right now how can i tell if the cyl walls are 427 walls? i know the motor has already had a .60 overbore and a 428 crank i dont have crossbolts but im never really looked to see if there were any bosses for them what should i look for and also what would you value this motor at with the 3x2 and everything
I'm sure you heard me talk about Dave Shoe's drill bit test? Dave came up with a slick way to field test a block with drill bits to tell what size cyl wall cores it has. The cyl wall cores are behind the blocks 6 freeze plugs. Yep you need to knock one out on each side. This will expose the wall core area and you'll see the gaps. Std 406 wall cores will snugly fit a 13/64" drill bit shank. 428 wall cores a 8/64" bit shank. And check each side!! One of the 406 blocks I had was cast with std 406 cores on one side and 427 cores on the other!! Very werid and odd that could happen but it shows it did. This is just a simple way to see what wall cores are inside. A sonic map is the best way to tell overall thickness.
As far as the crossbolt bosses the block will have 3 nubs on each side opposite the end of the 3 center maincaps. Some 406's have them and some don't. It's nice if they are there as you can easily crossbolt the block with new maincaps. You can still crossbolt with out the bosses but there is a slick way to do it if they are and your using oem or aftermarket billet caps.
Value is a tough call. But my C3-D bare block and C2SE-C heads all exact same date code matching sold on epay for $3k. My 3x2 was original to the engine, matching carbs, polished intake and aircleaner sold for $1800. I've never seen these blocks and heads go that high before. Add $400 for your 428 crank, $150 if the rods are big bolt and $150 for the slugs. $200 if the rockers have the cast iron slotted rocker stands. $200 if the original balancer/pulley is still there. Oem dual point dizzy $150-200 and all the other odds and ends. So about $5k more or less?? The value will go up in time even more.

im gonna try to do the drill bit test here is the date code 2b20:3 thats on the block this just keeps getting better and better im hoping it hhas 427 walls that would make my day
2B20:3 is 62/Feb/20th/3rd shift. Well it's sure worth checking the wall cores. You never know. This link shows a 2 bolt main 427 industrial block. You can see the three crossbolt bosses on each side opposite the sides of the 3 center maincaps.

On the 2 bolt main 427 in that link...I really don't know much more than the info that's posted. It was a guy on the net54 forums find. And he posted those pics for the nay sayers...and there were plenty of those. He was asking $1500 for the block i think. You can clearly see the shaved sideoiler passage on the side of the block which was common to some marine 427 blocks to clear the motor mounts. Pretty cool find I'd say. I bet he got it CHEAP!! So it goes to show these things are out there.
my friend that i bought the 406 from bought a 427 that was in a water pump out west....it had the castings for a side oiler like the block in the link but it wasnt there either. but my friends industrial block has cross bolts and screw in freeze plugs. so maybe the side oiler not being there is an industrial thing
