what do you guys think of this deal

my friends dad is selling his 406. i has a recent .60 overbore, Tri-Power setup purchased from HP Trends less than 6months ago, a holman and moody cam, as well as a spare isky cam with lifters, the intake and carbs are original off a 61 or 62 galaxie....im not really sure. the motor has 10.1 pistons. it was in a 67 fairlane and it was running a 13.2 at 106mph. i am being offered the motor for $3500. the intake and carbs are almost worth that and it only has 2000miles on it since the rebuild. could this motor except another overbore? thats the only way i could convince my dad to get it. he is going to buy it as a graduation present and this motor is gonna have to get me through college. if something happened to it would i be able to overbore it? and how hard would it be to find pistons i have heard that it is near impossible to find them for a 406 and that i will have to use chevy pistons or have some made. but all in all i think its a great deal on a rare motor. what do yall think?

I think you answered your question.........rare motor - good deal BUT.....for a comuter car for college........I think........NOT.

Why you ask.......tri-power carbs, 10.1 compression.....& the list goes on.....

Now if your restoring/hotrodding a early 60's fairlane/galixy - & school is X town - probably not an issue.

But then again........if your looking for the hot rod comuter car - go for it.

As for the .060 overbore......If it was a BBC I'd say depending on compression & HP then a .100 would be it. Although I run a blue oval FE 352 in my 62 truck I'm not as up to date on max. bore limits.

its gonna have to be a daily driver, im never really gonna get more than 25miles from home, so its not gonna be that bad. this is gonna be way overkill for a driver haha. all i wanna do is dominate GT mustangs and camaros

The block may be able to take more IF it has been cast with 427 cyl wall cores. You'd have to check them. If it's got 406 cyl wall cores it might be at the end of the line and sleeves would be the only other option. Sleeves are about $100 a hole installed. I've mentioned the drill bit test a few times here so try a search for that. Otherwise it's not a bad price other than the block being .060. I sold a bare C3AE-D .030 406 block, stock but complete C2SE-C 406 heads ( both block and heads date code matching) and the original tripower setup for more. The original 406 slugs were forged and made by TRW for Ford. These are hard to find in any size. Also what is the block and head casting numbers? You want to verify they are 406 parts for that kind of cash.

im 100% sure its a 406 i helped my buddy run the numbers when we first got it. i have since forgotten what they are. we ran the numbers because when we bought the car the guy we got it from thought it was an R code 67 fairlane. i ran the numbers on the block and heads with my buddy and it ended up being a 406. so im sure im getting what im paying for. the only reason im getting it at this price is bc im a very close friend and they are building a 427 for the car and have no use for the 406. i just figured if anything the carbs and intake are worth it

You're NOT going to be dominating Camaros (the LS1 equipped '01 & '02 anyway), unless you put it into something a whole lot lighter than the Fairlane it was in.

My '02 SS Convertible has run a 13.12 @ 109 - my buddy has an '02 WS6 Trans Am, and he's run a 12.86 - oh, yeah - both of our cars are BONE STOCK

I don't see how you could go wrong pricewise, and you seem willing to live with the compression and gas milage situation.


Big block everythings are getting harder to find, especially of the blue oval variety, and coupled with the tripower set up would make it a no brainer for me.

Hey, if worst comes to worst, you could always trade it in later for a Hyundai or KIa. :eek: :eek: :p :p

sorry for making a generalization i was talking about the crappy 305 Iroc camaros that all the rednecks around here drive. we raced an '02 SS when that motor was in the fairlane and yah we got owned. i think a 406 galaxie can handle an Iroc and as far as the new GT mustangs from what i understand they weigh a ton i have heard some people say almost 4000lbs (i could be wrong)

From what I've seen at the track, the new Mustang GT, for the most part, will run low 14 ~ high 13 stock. I haven't seen the 500HP ones run yet - looking forward to it

Well it was almost 2 years ago to the day you posted an ad here looking for a 406. LOL. And the price is pretty good and long as you understand the block may be at it's natural limits. But it's a rare find and there are not many around. And it sounds like it's a good runner. You'll need Denny to make you a flouresent 406 avatar logo tho!!!

i almost have my dad talked into loaning me the money... this is prob. the most exciting thing to happen to me with cars, my first experience with muscle/classic cars was in a black Galaxie with a 406 Tri-Power setup, i was 8 and from then on i was obsessed with ford and Galaxies. then i learned more about the 406 and it soon became my favorite motor. when i was in 5th grade i wrote a report about how a 406 galaxie was my dream car. i had no clue about cars or motors but i knew i liked it. so getting this 406 and having it in my galaxie puts me one step closer to my dream car....now all i need is the 62 galaxie but i think I'll keep the 65 for a while since a lot of my 'firsts' were in that car if ou know what i mean haha anyway its surreal to be 18 and have the motor that i have dreamed about for years. im sure this all sounds so dumb but i man am i ever excited. im gonna get some weird looks at shows with a 406 in a '65 haha.

i talked to my buddy he sent me the dyno sheet
the average out of 5 pulls was
497 ftlbs of torque at the wheels
400 hp at the wheels
the lowest the numbers ever got was 470 and the hp dropped down to 355 all of that was on the 5th pull so that seems reasonable
the cam is a Holman & Moody HA-B

2 air cleaners, one oval and 3 seperate finned ones
ceramic coated Hooker Super Competition headers
apparently the pistons are 428 pistons and the crank is also

sounds like a good motor..... if you really want to be tearing people up light to light then you can gear it to be a rocket at short distance, problem is that you're going to kill your gas mileage and top speed..... i just got sold my 54 packard that was beating everyone light to light had a caddy 500 in it, but if i went much further than the average light spacing i was dead... the trick to getting that beast to move was 5.56 gears in the rear..... my top speed was only 85mph before i was redlining though

i think im just gonna keep the 3.00 and myabe get a posi unit... i have to drive this car 20miles one way to school everyday until i move this summer and i like being able to take it on road trips. i saw an adapter plate to adapt a ford AOD to an FE but i'm not sure if an AOD could handle the power from that 406 for very long. if i had over drive i could put in a 4.11 or something. i found a TCI C6 for about $650 from Summit that sound like a good deal but then i back to the same problem....only 3 gears. anyone have any 4 speeds they wanna sell?

There are guys running AOD's with more power in front of them then the 406 your looking at has. Look up Performance Automatic. They are the ones to talk to about the AOD if thats the way you want to go. That might be pretty cool behind that 406
