Big Problem, need assistance!

After Close inspection of my heads, I found out that they have 2 different castings. Ones from a 65 Galaxie, and ones from a 17's something passenger car.

That explains why half of the piston rings are broken.

Ok, So now I need a good set of FE heads. I want stock, to mild. What do you guys think about these listings I found?

Ok, now with the heads behind me, I still need pistons ASAP. The machine shop is waiting for me to bring some in to complete the boring processes.

I'll need .030 overbore pistons. They need to be strong, but not forged strong. Can you guys help me find some on summit?

They need to be 10.1 Compression capable. That is the C/R I'm planning on running. I need to order this tonight if all possible.

Im really likin the looks of those Police heads.

if you are running cast iron heads, 10:1 is a bit strong, but can be done. cam selection will be important - you want to avoid detonation.

you want a fast car, but stock heads?? pick one or the other, you don't get both!

pistons come in cast, hypertectic (spelling not right on that) and forged. good, better best. go with hypertectic, stronger than cast by far, not as 'spensive as forged, and you shouldn't need forged.

now yo need more information before you buy ANY heads...

also, any head made before 75 or so will have been designed for leaded gas - leaded gas is no longer available. one thing it did was lubricate valves seats, so without lead you need ot have the seats replaced - see you machine shop for info and costs. if you do not do this, you will regret it and be doing it again later - if you cannot afford to do it now, YOU CANNOT afford to do it TWICE!

in 1965, The ford Galaxie with the 4bbl 390 came STOCk with 10.1 Why would I want to go any lower than stock? Ill go high 9's atleast to satisfy me. Bigger HP gain.

C5AE-R heads are not nescessarily stock you know. They came in the police intercepters. Its more of a Hipo head. What do you think?

Ive read the forum, (even though they werent for the C5AE-R heads, and it sounds great).

New valve seats? I never heard of getting new seats.

Speedpro is the only company that makes high compression pistons for my engine.

Sorry, but Im getting really really antsy, and im recieving different answers from 9 people. I try to take in all the knowledge and experience from others, and use it. It gets terribly frustrating at times.

From my eyes, im seeing ebay buy it now police intercepter heads. THey are a good stock replacement, and I NEED them. Or I could mix my heads up like it was when I baught it.....NOT!

I dont think there is nothing wrong with buying HIPO ford stock heads, and putting in 10.1:1 compression (just like it was stock). 330HP Rated for 4v. Why go less?

I understand about the leading issue, and I also understand it wont be too much to machine the heads so where they can accept leaded gas. this will still be cheaper than buying new edelbrock RPM heads- $1,200. (If they even need it. The description says ''hardened valve seats)

Im on a 2,000 budget. I need to start executing.

I am also going to replace the cam with a low rpm one. Yes, I am thinking about pre-detonation, and taking all the steps to conquer it.

Nash, did you look through the classifieds on the network54 FE forum? Chuck D has a set of stock C4AE-G heads for sale for 75 bucks for the pair and a set of tricked out C3AE-C (406) heads with the big valves in them already AND harland sharp rockers with the end stands for 700 bucks total...

And if you look further down in the classifieds you will see Sledge has several sets of the -R heads for sale at 100 a pair...

Half of the rings are broken due to an unbalanced heads.

The owner mixed the heads. One is a C6AE-H, and one is a C8XXX.

I dunno if I would blame the broken rings on a pair of mismatched heads. The C6 and C8 head will have about the same cc chamber. Both will have the same intake port. Both should be 2.05" intake & 1.55" exhaust valves. The only real difference would be how much the thermactor bulge is intruding into the exhaust port.

Running a 10:1 compression ratio is possible on low octane pump gas without detonation, but you have to do a lot to accomplish this... ports reworked to act as high swirl, a near perfect quench area for the flame path, and you would probably have to get the piston faces and combustion chambers treated with that high tech plasma coating...

Besides that, I wouldn't believe 100% what the car manufacturers claimed back during the horsepower war years as far as compression ratios and advertised horsepower go. I have a 1964 390 that the owners manual claimed to be 10:1 cr but when we actually measured everything it worked out to be 9.45:1 cr.

If you guys can convince me that these STL-H304P30 (type as summit part #) Sterling pistons are mid 9's, Ill get them.

I need to shoot for mid 9's to upper 9's.

The set of keith black Hypers are only $10 less than the forged 9.9:1 speed pros.

One Guy said with 72CC heads and 9.9 CR pistons, I would be at about 9.6:1 compression (rough). Atleast thats what his CR results came about for a simular set-up.

You guys are saying to go with 9.5 Compression Hyper T's correct? Find some for me at summit! I've called and spoke to 2 different tech's, and they couldnt get information for some reason.
