identify 390 or 428

hi,i can buy a fe bb ,there are few nrs on it c7ae-a, 9425e,352-11 , c6me-a the owner says its a 428 is there anyway i can check it?

thkx for the info. i checked the site and it could be a 428 .i think i will measure the stroke to be a little sure about it .

Marco you need to check the cyl bore to be sure it's a 428. Measure for a 4.13 bore taking overbore into account. The main problem with block casting numbers is the same number was used sometimes on different bore blocks. Also production 428 blocks have a few external clues to help. Most std 428 passenger car blocks were marked with a crude sandscratch "A" on the rear of the block. CJ and SCJ and some PI blocks are marked with the same crude sandscratch except a "C" in the same place on the rear of the block. Exceptions to this are service blocks which for the most part were sold over the counter through the mid 70's. The 428 first came out in 66 and was in automotive production until 70. After that just over the counter parts were available for the 428. All 428 crankshafts are easy to ID besides measuring the stroke. On the edge of the 7th counterweight ofnthe crank look for a IU or a IUB. This will tell you it's a 428 crank. There was also a IUA crank used in the 428SCJ but these were only common to the SCJ engines of 69-70. So to recap....measure the cyl bore and measure the crank stroke or check for the IU, IUB on the crank.
