I've heard discussions about the engine in a T-Bird sitting level in the engine compartment and the engine in a Galaxie sitting at a tilt. Are all Galaxie engines sitting at a tilt? The reason I'm asking is that a friend has a tri-power setup that has the carbs all on the same plane. I know that other tri-power setups have the carbs at different planes because of engine tilt. My Galaxie has the Thunderbird engine in it and I don't want to buy the wrong intake.

hi unioncreek, well my 64 galaxie had a 289 in originally but, it was long before i got the car so from factory i cant tell you any facts, but i can tell you that the 390 that was in it wasnt tilted and i had a 427 medium riser 2x4 setup on it. hope this helps you, oh and by the way if performance is what your after i highly recommend you NOT doing it there are far better aftermarket intakes now, but if for looks only you cant beat 3 dueces:D :D :D anyway let me know if you are going this way for i might have an original oval 3 duece air cleaner for you but ill have to do some digging cant remember if i kept it when i switched to the 2x4 or not but ill check.
There is not a front-motor, rear-drive car out there that is factory original in which the motor is not tilted down at the rear. On any Ford, it's usually about 3 degrees. The factories do that to swing the transmission down to provide leg room in the front seat area and to lower the driveshaft for leg room in the rear.
If the setup you're looking at is a Ford unit, I can guarantee that the manifold is cut on a 3 degree angle so that the carbs will sit level on the motor.

Unioncreek, what Tech says is right. Three degrees is about 5/8 inch in a foot so, looking at the engine in the car, it isnt noticeable.
When you say that all the carbs are on the same plane, you mean that the carb mounting flanges all line up if you put a straight edge across them......even if they are cut at 3 degrees, they all line up (if they are cut as a unit, not individually).
You can check the angle with an angle level.....put the level on the driveway and measure that and then put the level on the carb flange. The reading should be different...by the tilt in the mounting. (Slightly different results in San Francisco, your angle may vary, not valid in the Bermuda Triangle, etc.)
Yep, Unioncreek, if you look at the carb flanges and then at the edge of the intake (on an FE that's part of the head under the Valve cover) the angles will be different. But on the few T-bird 3x2 intakes that were made those two angles will be the same. Or better yet, set the intake on a work bench and you will see the differences in the angles. The carb flanges are on one plane and the manifold itself are on a different plane.
The galaxy and other fords mounted the engine on a downwards slant just like techinspector 1 said.
Dont know about whos right or wrong on the degree if any at all i dont know never set up the transit as far as what tech said, but i know i was right on what i stated, for i was thinking tilt as in my 89 f150 the 302 is tilted close to 2" from front to rear and my ol 390 might have been maybe a 1/2" for i built and raised it to help clear the headers i put on it, so as for what i was saying earlier if you read the article i stated a 2 x 4 med riser worked on mine and there was no motor in it from the way factory had made so like i said i cant say what it was like from the factory.Quote:

i think the motor is tilted down to allow the oil to drain back to the oil pump pick-up. :HMMM:

Bob the Tbird intake is really not the one you want. With that said if it's a good price grab it and sell it. They are pretty rare. You can then get the correct one for your car. Look for a nice clean intake and then get the new holley's from Carls Ford parts. Your correct that the Tbird setup sat flat because the engines were not tilted like the Galaxies. The Tbird tripower is unique to the bird and was pretty much a one off item. The single carb intakes used in the Tbirds were the std FE with angled carb pad. They used an angled spacer to compensate for the difference. G.

hello ford makes both front and rear what part of that dont you understand i cant say about chevy i dont know, but the real ?? here is the tilt of the engine so if its tilted back with a front sump your right oil wont go up hill so you explain to everyone what your talking about we were all talking about intakes and the tilt of the engine you brought up oil pans?:HMMM:Quote:

show me on this thread where i said a motor tilt towards the radiator. I've never seen one either. your carb. need sit level and the motor needs to be down in the back for clearance and oil drainage. you ask me how the oil got to the front of the ford front sump pan and i showed you. whats the problem?Quote:

If you want a Tri-Power and you are not concerned about all that numbers matching/correct/not correct BS, grab it and bolt it on. The 406 Tri-power was different than the 390 62-3 T Bird unit primarly in HEIGHT. The T Bird intake will fit unter the hood of your Galaxie, but the the 406 unit will not let the Thunder-bird hood close.
The 406 will make a little bit more HP, based mostly on the high rise design, but not that much.
Yes you engine sits at a slight tilt, but not enough to matter. (Do you think the makers of the run of the mill aftermarket manifolds really take the eninge tilt into consideration?). JMO, but I believe the tilt on the 406 intakes was mainly for astetics.
Just for general information in the early 60s (at least through 64) Ford slapped Thunderbird valve covers on all their 390 engines no matter what car they were put in. PURE ADVERTISING.
FWIW those Tbird tripower setups are selling for around $2000. The Galaxie setups $1200 and up depending on how nice and completel it is.
your right you never stated toward the radiator but if the engine is tilted so it will drain back to the sump well on a front sump engine that means it would be tilted towards the radiator so you explain it then!Quote:

Like tech said most ford manifolds are cut an an angle. when i do an engine swap i use a level to try to get the carb mounting surface level side to side and front to back . they work much better that way. If you end up angled, the boaters have angle spacer plates you can add to level the carb. I pitted on the 427 cobra that set the MIS lap record . with the the 427 tunnel port motor in the car it sat with the motor nose Down. we used boat angle spacers and regular spacers to have the carbs level and to equalize length from carb venturi to intake valve.
The tilt is so the shaft lines up with the rear end, and to get the driveshaft lower,reducing the hump in the floor.
yes i know they have both, dont you know that oil runs down hill. go look at the oil pans. :rolleyes: :whacked:
