460 ford carbuerator
I just purchased a Superformance Cobra replica with the following: 460cu in .030 overbored, Holley 850 double pumper 4781-4150, Edelbrock Performer RPM dual Plane High Rise Manifold, Edelbrock Alum heads 10-1 compression, 2.19 int 1.76 ex, comp cams 280 degree cam .520 lift, 1.7 roller rockers, Hydraulic lifters, 3.73 rears. The carb on it is running way too rich and I would just as soon go to a different Holley carb, (not a dual pumper) I want reliable street performance. Would a 780cfm be sufficient or would I have to go to an 850CFM Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to do this by trial and error which would cost me more than I care to think. So why wouldn't you simply buy a book on your carb, and set it up properly for your engine? Around $20 for a good book, a few bucks for jets & maybe gaskets and on top of getting it to run right you learn how your carb works and will understand later when it may need a tweak again. The general rule of thumb says multiply the cubic inches by two .. then round up to the next available cfm carb size.
SO, no - you're not oversized, (yet).. LOL..
She oughta run good on a 780 or and 850 equally. As RSpears says, get the book for short money and you'll know how to tune the carb and get the best out of it. You'll also need a vacuum gauge and a timing light if you don't have'em already.

most likely the power valve is blown causing a rich tune.

as suggested by a few just tune/jet the carb you now have down to what you want and make sure you have a good MSD ignition system ...

Hello Frank, I would not use a double pumper on the street unless I were using a 3000+ stall converter. Those monsters are double rich to begin with and you really need some revs to kick them into the system. Use a vacuum secondaries carb if you're just street drivin' with it. A 780 would work great. By the way, good job on matching the cam intake duration to the static compression ratio. Should be fun and run detonation-free on pump gas.
