What do you think of the build as a whole?:1975 30 over 460, Edel 75cc heads, H535CP pistons for about 10.5 to 1, FMS roller rockers, Comp Cams 34-250-4 cam- 584/588 lift, dur. @.05 is 240/246; Ford Powertrain Applications custom headers, Perf. RPM manifold w/ 870 Holley (elec choke), MSD 6AL w/ MSD vac. adv. distributor. Transmission to be built next week which includes a 2800rpm stall conv., 3.89 gears for street and some strip (Lewistown MT and Minot ND), my original 2.50 or new 3.00's for the highway and interstate. This is all going into 1977 Tbird that I've already swapped over to a 460 some years ago.

I had a built 460 with a 750 holley-it seem tokier with a 680 avenger and I had 355 gears. I think your 850 is too big for the gears you are running.

Your compression ratio will be closer to 11.3:1, not 10.5:1. That's quite a bit of cam for the street and the rear axle gearing...even with the 2800 stall (which helps).

Thanks Paul. Is the listing I have for the pistons wrong or am I misreading something?? Im having a ford mechanic/ engine builder do the build for me this coming week- he knows big blocks very well. I guess I'm going to have to mix race gas. Thats ok; not a lot of miles going onto the car. We'll see how it runs soon on the test stand. ----I just re-read a couple of posts to me and I guess I don't totally understand "squish." I would think that w/ my deck height 1975- 10.320, that I'd have less CR than a shorter deck height. I don't believe the machinists here/ around are capable of being that precise in cutting down the deck. I definitely don't want detonation though either.

With that comp ratio, Ive decided to do a little more work. I just got a Hughes SFI flexplate, ARP bolts, ARP harm balancer bolt and a few other goodies and sent needed parts to machine shop to be decked, balanced and line bored. In the long run, I hope to have a better big block, even if it is 11.5:1cr and running on strictly race gas. Hopefully it doesn't take them long, as I've never done any business w/ them. 11.5 to 1, 584/588 lift cam screams POWER to me. I hope it works. Paul, what gear ratio do you suggest, if not 3.89? I predict that you will be sick of this motor within 30 days. Once you wake up and realize that you will have to feed it race gas for the rest of its life, you'll probably be tearing into it to change either pistons or heads.

OK, the block deck height is 10.320" The stroke radius is 1.925". The rod is 6.605". The piston is 1.752". The stack adds up to 10.282". Deducting the stack from the block deck height leaves us with a piston deck height of 0.038".
Here are the values:
cylinder 4.390" x 3.850", 954.9cc's
head 75cc's
piston 4.2cc's
piston deck height 4.390" x 0.038", 9.4cc's
gasket Edelbrock 7314 4.5" x 0.048", 12.5cc's

Divided equals 10.445:1 static compression ratio with 0.086" squish.

What would I do? I'd cut the block decks to zero and have the thickness of the gasket as the squish dimension. Then I'd use enough cam and the 95cc heads to get the motor into pump gas territory and make a scary fast motor.
Zero deck, 0.048" squish, 95cc heads, 9.55:1 static compression ratio. CompCams 34-711-9 solid roller cam, custom ground by Comp to reduce lift to 0.700" so you could use the springs that Edelbrock assembles on the heads (0.700" lift limit).

These numbers were achieved with 0.700" lift on the DynoSim. If you would prefer a hydraulic cam, call Comp and see if they can grind you a hydraulic roller that is close to the specs on this solid roller. In my opinion, using a flat tappet cam in this day and age is just insane.

I was beta testing a java Compression Ratio applet I am developing and get these results, which is close very to the Crane advertised DCR of 9.5 for the cam.

What was your planned deck height and gasket thickness? With those numbers I could run it again. I assumed 0 deck height, .038 compressed gasket thickness (assume the same diameter as piston), flat top pistons and rod length of 6.8.

Also if those pistons have a valve relief, that volume should be added to the displacement volumes for a more accurate number.

I'm stuck with the 75's for now, but I havn't gotten the block and related parts back from the machine shop yet. I'm thinking of going with the KB pistons that Tech had originally rec'd for this build- I've got a little time to get them so they can be hung on the rods. Race gas= $7.20 per gallon- only by the drum @ $385. Yikkes! 24gal tank= 2 fills and that aint good seeing as the stock 460 in the car is a pig on gas. The other 2 cars I was looking at for this engine are in too poor of shape for me, so it's onward ho with the land yacht LOL!

The motor sounds like its going to be strong, but if you are going to have to use race gas, then put the engine into a lightweight car you can race.

And put a mild 460 back into your luxo-barge and go cruising. Coz it will never be an effective race car, and with that race spec engine, it wont be a fun cruiser either.

Like many, I know this from personal experience unfortunately.
