Dave where do you jack up the engine so that the pan is free to come out?

Put a block - i.e. 2x6 or 8 - under the pan, loosen the motor mounts, jack up the engine. Slip a piece of 2x4 in between the mount and frame bracket, loosen the jack, and pull it out (you might also need a piece of 3/4 screwed to the 2x4 for just a bit more room. You then have all kinds of space to remove that rusty crusty old pan and slip in one that isn't. A new oil pump and drive are a good idea when the pan comes off - might also want to look at a rod insert and a main bearing, the thrust is best.
