how do you determine how much stall you need ?
right now i have to have my in park idle up to 1500 rpm, because when i
put it in drive the engine is bogged down so much
i have a 514 stroker, with edelbrock rpm cam, and rpm intake, eldelbrock 800 cfm carb, 4.11 posi rear end running 29x12 in tires, vehicle weight 3800 lbs
I always go by you want your stall to match the peak torque of the motor. You should know this from the specs of your cam. Best to contact the manufacturer and tell them the specs of your motor because a torque converter rated at say 3000rpm may actually stall quite a bit higher behind a stout big block... most cam manufacturers have recommendations for tq converter stall along with the cam specs on their websites...

if the torque converter is too low will this cause the engine to bog down when placed in gear? going from park to drive it drops about 600 rpm
sounds more like a tuning problem to me. If the conv is too tight it will
want to pull foward or die at full stop.Like Skids said, torque will cause
a conv to stall more.
Yes... could very well be a bad tune... how hi is the idle rpm before you drop in gear. Might be idle circuit is too lean but others will have better info...

what set up springs are in the carb? how much do you have in the dist and how much do you have on the crank what rpm are you fully curve at. when will it start to curve .how much timming ? how big of a cam @050 it very well could be the stall i had 4 or so go bad they can hold the engine down sounds like to me you could need more stall must have a big cam? i have cars that idle at 1200 they do drop a whee bit when put in gear alot of the stalls out there are over rated junk .you really do not get a good stall till you hit the $1000+ mark but that could just be me
