Broken timing chain ??
Greetings,
Just put a new Roller timing chain set in my stock '69 429. As fate would have it, it somehow snapped the fuel pump arm off, and wedged the piece in my new gears . I figured this out after the engine wouldn't start after numerous attempts. Bottom line is that I cranked the motor over and over after the timing chain had snapped. I'm hoping I can just put a new chain on and go, of course after the cam is lined up. My question is, did i do damage to the valves and or valve train? Do the pistons hit the valves on these old 429s or have Motor Gods spared my dumb **s?? Any help would be great.Last edited by jetspeedfreek; 09-25-2007 at 08:16 PM.

Thanks Denny. I did what you suggested the first time I put it together, and look what it got me, LOL. Just can't figure out how the fuel pump lever could get stuck in the timing chain. It all went back together just fine(no binding or missalignment), but stuff happens I guess. I'll try it one more time.
Thanks again

After checking, it appears that I have the sprocket with the built in spacer. The thickness matches tho original gear. It seems there are two types. Thanks for the heads up.

some people that build the little 144-200 I6's which are based off the FE platform, forget the spacer, and the cam wedges itself in the timing gears, binds up and locks the motor up, until the chain snapsYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
