Where's the 6-banger sump? Probably mid-engine, huh?
There's no x-member at all now, is there? My '61 "one-piece" has one under the rad, and nothing else til back at the rear end.
correct no x member now. mounts on the 6 cyl are under radiator.
dennic carp sells a x member for that truck. the mouter that i have been rebuilding has front sump.
"correct no x member now."
o.k., I'm confused. Your original question was about a front sump or rear sump pan. If there's no crossmember under the motor to get in the way of the sump, it doesn't matter what sump pan you use. Also, you've mentioned a Dennis Carpenter crossmember twice now without describing it. Is it a crossmember that will go under the motor or is it to mount the transmission?
it has a straight 6 now that mounts under the radiator. i will be putting a 460 bbf in this truck so i have to get a cross member to hold the motor. i was told i could use either one front sump or rear sump, because the cross member goes directly under the center of the engine. thanks
You will need a rear sump pan in a truck I believe. You guys can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the front sump pan will only work in passenger cars. The way the front x-member sits in a truck requires the rear sump pan.
Well then, you've answered your own question. If I had a choice of either sump, I'd keep the front sump rather than use a long pickup from the pump to a rear sump.
I agree with Richard. Go front sump. I've got a 390 in my 55 using the universal motor mount cross member from Speedway and the front sump clears everything. By the way, that crossmember add reads for 53-64 pickup. They also have a cross member for a 460 that will fit your truck. J. C. Whitney carries them also for FE's and also for the 429-460.
Go to www.jcw.com and look up part number WL377379 or www.Speedwaymotors.com and look up part number 720-9313. They both work with a front sump oil pan on the 429-460.
thanks all for taking time to answer my ?'s ........this info helps me out alot. oldf100fordman what tranny are you useing in your truck. also did you add any extra support to the front end or are you useing a sub frame.
Thanks
jim
Nope, no subframe. didn 't add anything but the crossmember and that made the frame a lot sturdier than it was before.
