i have a 51'(i think)merc metoer 4 DR in my backyard in has been there for years, but it has everything on it still, even the belts and air filter. Does anyone know what this motor is worth approx. it's has a 3 on the tree tranny.

In Canada only the Ford trucks were called Mercury. The meteor was the name given to Canadian Ford cars. The 51 Meteor has the same grille as a 51 Mercury. If the grille is good it's probably worth more than the engine. If it doesnt run it might be worth $100 if you can find someone who wants one to rebuild. If it runs good you could get $500 but buyers are scarce. There might be more interest in a Meteor parts car than just the engine. Get some pictures and put it on ebay. Put it under parts & accessories. The listing fees are much lower than cars for sale fees. My brother is looking for a Mercury pickup any year from 46 to 60. Most of the ones on ebay are in western Canada. He doesn't want to travel that far to bring it home. What part of Canada are you from? It's a big country.

The motor in that Meteor may have a Merc stroker crank in it as it is a Mercury. Meteors were a Mercury brand. We also had fords up here. Mercury sold Meteors and Monarchs and in 46-48 114 inch wheelbase Mercury 114's with the 114 X being the ultimate 114. Monarch was top of the line. Meteor grilles in 49 and 50 were similar to Mercs, but were shorter as the grille surround was smaller and they both used the same center chrome piece. 51 Meteor had its own grille and was not like any other ford or merc. The park lamp housings were ford as was the grille surround, but the grille was unique. 51 Merc was a carryover type styling of the 49-50 waterfall. 51 ford was a double bullet style. For the sake of we U.S. guys, some of the Canadian market stuff can become somewhat confusing. The '49-51 Meteors were based on body shell we are familiar with as Fords. The same years of Monarch were based on the Mercury shells. As pointed out, the grilles were the most distinguishing trim element, though there were some other trim differences.
As a side note, during the WWII years when Ford was planning for post war product lines, the body that eventually became the '49-51 Merc was originally slated to be the Ford. What a different custom world we might have today if the original plan had emerged!

Thanks for posting the pics Bob. That should show the difference between ford and meteor and mercury. 49 Meteor had a stainless bolt in Merc look alike grille surround. Great if you want the merc look without making one up. The splash pan is different than ford because of the merc type grille. 50 Meteor had a painted grille surround. The hood on both cars was not a 51 ford or Meteor. It is a 49-50 ford hood with a filler piece in the center front. There are some subtle differences. By 51 the Meteor shared all the 51 ford parts but the grille in the center. Any other questions just ask as I think I have stumbled across most of the differences by now. Pat.
the merc that i have is the same as the 51' merc hardtop, it even has all the windows but one.And the floorboards are rusted.

Canada has always had Mercury cars. The Monarch was the Ford division's answer to the Mercury, and the Meteor was the Mercury division's answer to the Ford.
In case your brother might be interested, I happen to know where there is a 53 Mercury pickup in Ontario, which is probably for sale pretty cheap. I don't know what condition it is in, as I only saw it for a couple of minutes 7 or 8 years ago, and I doubt that it has moved an inch since:-)
