Slot Model Car Racing Anyone?

If you are like me, the first cars you drove were slot cars. I never forgot the fun and excitement of small scale racing. In fact, I still have many of the cars I built in the 1960's and have resumed racing the great new generation of very accurate scale model slot cars.

My club races weekly and we are preparing an annual event. We are promoting it widely, because it is designed for current and returning racers. We've had great support form sponsors and have participants coming from all over the US, and as far away as Brazil, Germany and France.

If you are like me, or remember the fun of slot car racing... maybe you have you old cars, or would enjoy building a new ones. If so, we hope to see you at our event. If you can't make it, enjoy our site, and maybe drop me a note.

In my Jr. High and early High School days I spent some time at the local slot car tracks... In Fact I was track champion a couple of years... I had a Group 24 and Group 18 1/24 scale cars and also some solid (non-flex chassis) 1/32 scale cars... I think I still have all my Slot Gear put away in a box somwhere...

That brings back a few memories...

Hey Jim, we used to use wintergreen oil on our tires to improve traction. I suppose today they've progressed to some more effective magic potion.

I had a few tricks too... I had installed a set of ball berrings in the ends of the axle tubes instead of using the brass bushings that came in the cars when they were new... The races were set up by a time limit and the power to the track was shut off at the end and your laps were counted... My cars would coast about a half lap after the power was off... Nobody could ever figure out why!!! ;)

I'd liekot see a photo fo the underside of that car. Is it 1/24 scale or 1/32?

We do have rules on legal width, but you can use all the ball bearig you want!

I had a secret that I never revealed till now. I took a few windings off the rotor. I tested them on my own track with a voltmeter. The modified motor drew more amps than stock and turned up faster. I could measure the amps drop on the other side of the track when I pulled the trigger. That made the competition slower. If I took off too many windings the motor would fry.

Whatever. If your're not gonna use the box of slot stuff mebbe you'd like to sell it to me.

Yes you guys remember that correctly. The dewinding trick is an old standard as well, although a properly powered track would not have the power drop you describe across lanes....

ANyway we'll be having all tis fun againin October at teh Dino Derby event. Anybody wanna race there?

They would not let us use any "stickum" at our local track... Seems like we used something they sold us at the track called Tiger Milk... Who knows what it was... It seem like I always had better luck just keeping the tires clean... For some reason the rear tires that I always used were orange...

In that list of cars you had...lots of Fords, then a Mopar and Chevy's ever since. What did that Mopar do to you?:eek:

I sold off my last little bit of slot car stuff last year on Ebay. I was AMAZED at what it went for! No wonder I couldn't find any track or anything at flea markets and such!

I always played at home or with friends. I somehow came after the 1/18 tracks and before the 1/24 so no local hobby shops had tracks (that i know of) - except RC car tracks, lots of them around (inside: dirt, carpet, pulling, outside:gas pavement and dirt.)

RC can be fun, but to be competitive you have as much in your hand as you might in a rat rod, and a real car has more appeal to me that an RC one.
