    need some advice on exhaust

     



    guys please help me out with this, one of my buddies removed his entire exhaust system from the muffler up to the headers, all he has no on the car is the stock headers, no muffler no y pipe, no cataylictic convertor nothing, he says that the engine will be able to breath better now and create a stronger running engine. He has a camaro like mine chevy 350 his is a street car he does not go to the track just messes around on the street expect for his air cleaner wich is K&N his car is stock...is this safe to do? will it harm the engine? he is telling me i should do it on one of my camaros what do you think should i remove my entire exhuast system except for the headers?

    By stock headers do you mean the stock cast exhaust manifolds?

    There are others, but 2 drawbacks would be excessive noise tickets
    and
    headaches from exhaust fumes in the "people compartment".

    just stock manifold on this camaro he wants me to do it too...will it make the engine run better is he right about that ?

    it will gain a little power without the restrictive exhaust, but its loud...if he doesnt want to buy a new exhaust he should get a $30 cut out..same effect, but only when you want it you unbolt the plate...i know on my LT1 a cut out loses a little low end but gains a little top end...i'd rather have low end just driving around town

    If you are looking for a flow-gain, spend the extra money and get a set of high-flow cats and mufflers. Open exhaust is a really easy way to get a ticket. And youll live longer not breathing carbon monoxide.

    Short answer . . . NO. There's much more potential for harm to the engine AND the driver (think about CO poisoning). However, I have to ask if this is a serious question. Here's my reason. It seems to be a rather odd question to be coming from a person who belongs to a car club, and owns a 147 mph, street driven Camaro.

    Seriously, who's gong to drive a car around on the street with nothing hooked up to the exhaust manifolds?

    Have you ever driven a car with open exhaust, especially open manifolds, it's darn loud and not a good loud either, it's kinda of a nasty loud. And like the others said you will have cops following you a few seconds you pull out on the street.
    Shoot, my car has duel 3 inch flow masters on it and it drives me nuts driving it around, I wear ear plugs for trips over 15 miles or I will be about deaf at the end of the trip.

    73RS, dual flowmasters that make you def after 15 miles and you wear ear plugs? Lol come on I think your exaggerating (sp) a bit because on my truck with a 454 we have dual all the way back flowmasters and I have them right under the cab right after the muffler pointing down before the rear differential and it's not that bad and not even on the highway. Either that or I am def... well I am already a little anyways.

    No- i wouldn't do it. It's not safe, and as your friend will find out, unless you re-adjust your air-flow mixture in your carb. your gonna burn valves, or your EFI control will need major adjustment that you may not be able to get.

    hey Dark, that would be illegal, very unhealty, and just a downright dumb plan. Real good way to poison yourself, burn your car to the ground, or if you're lucky just bend all the exhaust valves when you shut the car off and all the cold air hits them. A good freeflowing exhaust system appropriately sized to the engine will speed the car up considerably.

    Maybe that's why my ears ring ALL the time now. He He He I had header mufflerz' with short turn downs in fron of the rear end. At the end of a long day of drivin' my ears whould Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Don't do it. It sounds like crap and also in some states its illegal, exhaust has to go past the passenger compartment, IE in a truck it can come out behind the cab, in a car behind the rear seats, anything before that is a ticket and makes the car inoperable, The little bit of extra power you get is not worth the CO poisoning, I have had it from an emersion heater that went out but the fuel continued to drip. 4 of us ended up in the emergency room in oxygen tents. Nasty stuff.
    Be safe and keep a full exhaust and don't drive with him until he has the same.

    thanks guys...henry i only asked this question because i personally have never done it....and here is a update for you guys....last night my buddies car...his transmission started messing up really bad...now it wont shift past 3rd...he cannot go above 35MPH LOL now he has to pay to have someone pull his auto trans and fix it.
