will not time
Well have not degreed the cam, just want to make sure before I rip into it. ford 390 rebuilt, new timing chain and gears bored .80 over, Elgin E965P cam, Mallory unilite distributor, it will not run unless the timing is 35BTC initial timing at 750rpm manifold vacuum is at 12psi when I advance it up it will not ping the old 390 would ping at about 12BTC is it posable that the timing chain is off one tooth? Any help before I rip into it.

sounds like it's a possibility.

Well, if my memory serves me correctly, a buddy had the same problem with a 427 (advancing the timing had no effect) and it turned out that his cam was round.
Did you break in the cam properly, and did it fire up right away? If it took a while to start, its possible the cam lube got wiped off and wore down some lobes...

sounds like a timing issue . i would think you would be off a tooth according to your low vacuum reading. although the cam your using may have alot of overlapp and wont create as much vacuum.
