hi all
i just moved from 4400 feet above sea level to 600 feet
and now my stock ford 302 wont even start (it ran fine before the move)
when i first got it off the trailer i was able to drive it around the block but now it wont even do a complete revolution when i try to turn it over.
i loosened the capture bolt on the distributor so i could turn it this way and that.
and now i can turn it over.
please be gentle because the only thing i have ever done to a holley carb was a simple rebuild kit.
I wouldn't think that a 3800foot elevation change would be a very noticeable impact. Driving KC to Denver is a 4000 foot change, and I never noticed anything different coming & going; but when we drove up Mount Evans to 14,500 the old Dodge 383 was idling at about 300rpm - barely heard it running, and accelerated reeeeally slow & sluggish. Still started and ran OK, though...
i dont even know where to start with this then.
by fooling with the dist (turning it back and forth) i got it to just barely start.
but it wouldnt keep running.
it seems like way too much fuel.
At the lower elevation the air should be more dense, which should tend to lean you out a bit I would think? Again, wouldn't think that elevation change would be noticeable on a stock 302, but I could be all wet.Quote:

I think you need to forget about the elevation change and start basic trouble shooting. Check to make sure the choke is operating, can you see fuel squirting into the carburetor when you operate the throttle? How fresh is your gas and how much is in the tank? Check to see if a fuel line may have gotten pinched/crushed when the car was tied to the trailer. If it was running fine when you loaded it, I would not mess with the timing. Yes check all your wires.

i figured i better at least give you an update.
since this is a recently built rod and many bugs are being worked out on a regular basis.
i went back to square one and put the dizzy and carb settings back to where they were originally.
then i cleaned the contacts of the dizzy and went along the electrical curcuits tightening every nut etc. i could find.
the engine started first try.
when it gets dark enough to see the timing light easily .
i will adjust that to the best of my ability.
Put a vacuum gauge on it and adjust timing for the highest vacuum.

Billyzz, it's your car, do what you want but, IMHO.. the only proper way to time you motor is with a timing light. Use the vacuum gauge to adjust your carb for the highest vacuum.
Again, IMHO.. FWIW.. Your Mileage May Vary, yada yada yada..
