    timing a 283

My 283 is out of a '66 chevelle and is in my rebuilt cj5. the engine was rebuilt to stock and has 1500 miles on it. A few questions...

    1) what should the timing at idle be on the 283? (checked with vacuum adv. unhooked and using a timung light)?
    2) Setting the idle rpm to around 700-800 with lines hooked up, will unhooking them affect the idle rpm? If so, does it need to be readjusted when checking the timing?
    3) Should idle mixture be adjusted before or after the timing (or does it matter)?
    4) basic procedure, warm engine, connect light, disconnect vacuum advance and plug, check timing, adjust as needed to correct timing, tighten bolt, recheck timing, connect vacuum line, good to go...
    Sound right?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Timing should be check with the vac line unhooked and plugged at that rpm. Then reconnect and fine tune idle screws and engine rpm.
If it's not broke, fix it anyway.
