    Mechanical injection fuel pumps ?

     



    I have a sbc fast burn 383 stroker engine and a Engler mechanical fuel injection system. This is going in our street legal winged sprint car to campaign our charity.

    Race sprints have the fuel pump on the back of the cam and since we'll have a transmission, we need a fuel pump to mount on the front of the cam. Here's the question. Are there any pumps that run the opposite rotation, will run either rotation or can be simply modified ?

    As a note, we'll actually run the water pump, fuel pump and power steering off the front of the engine just like the racing sprint, except for the fuel pump.

    Sprints ran the fuel pump off the front of the cam for years, should be plenty of the couplers, drives, and front covers around yet. Or, a mandrel off the crank hub with a belt driven pump works too....

    I ran a belt drive pump on a SBC with Hilborn stack injection off a sprint car, on the street. Turned out to be too temperamental for the street so it didn't last long.

    knew a guy with a blower with mechanical injection 540bbc he spent more money and time on that thing . he had to one up me as i just had carbs on my 548. cool . but was a P.O.S . i hate to of seen his cell phone bills. he called many. i built a new sruge tank he re worked all his fuel lines he sold the car i do not think its was ever working rigth. there great for WOT some can get them to work good but i never seen one on the street

    I usta' say all it took was a cloud passing by on a clear day to mess up the tune. When tuned right it had the throttle response of a 2 cycle, but it wouldn't take long (mere hours) for the idle to go wacky, start hard, go lean, go rich. It was fun at first, but got old fast.

    To answer your question FunFer, fuel injection pumps can swap rotations by removing the cover and making an internal change-i had to do mine years ago and can't remember exactly but do recall being impressed with the simplicity of design. There is a notch on the cover if that notch is at 3 oclock it is CW, notch at 9 oclock it is CCW and when you make the internal change the notch moves. Open it up and it is so simple you'll say 'why didn't i think of that'
