I have used Vaseline to hold the rod up long enough to get the pump arm under, and then put the bolts in.
I'm sure there will be jokes about this post but it works.

The upper front motor mount hole is drilled through to the fuel pump rod hole. A bolt with long threads threaded into this hole will hold your pump rod in place. There may be a bolt in this hole already, if it's not being used for some accessory mount, but it's short and only there to keep oil from leaking out.
