guys: is there anything out there for a stand alone air /fuel guage?
i just installed a kit for my three duce setup,(speedway) i'm just a little
curious as to how close the mixture is...
since the car isn't computer controlled i would like to find out what
the mixture is like under load and at highway speeds.
i understand a wide band o2 sensor and a guage should be all i need.
has anybody scratch built one of these instruments?:whacked:
weld a bung in the exhaust screw in an o2 sensor run the wire inside and hook it to a digital volt meter has to be high impedance dvom do not turn the meter to ohms that will trash the o2 sensor the higher the volt reading the richer the mixture tomorrow I will find my chart to convert volts to a/f ratio and post it.......ted

just go to any auto parts buy an after market one wire gm o2 sensor they almost all the same 30.00 dollars or so. don't by the 2 wire that second wire is for a heater makes the sensor heat up faster you don't want that make sure the exhaust sys has a good ground or put a short sheet metal screw into the pipe hook a ground wire and run both wires into the cockpit hook the o2 wire to the positive lead and the ground wire to the negative lead of the dvom the o2 sensor is actually a battery that produces millivolts it samples out side air at 21% o2 and the exhaust o2 content the bigger difference there is the more voltage it produces in the combustion process o2 is fuel it burns and is converted to co2 carbon dioxide the the lower the o2 content the more dissimilar the compounds are the higher the milivolts its an electrolysis process like a battery I have a chart that will convert the dvom readings to a/f ratios packed away in my old stuff from my days of teaching I just have to dig it out I am sorry I haven't had time my wife is not doing well and I spend alot of time taking care of her but I promise I will find it and post in the next day or two.....ted

I got one and love it. Works great with the blower. I don't know how I ever got along without it.
The gauges are available from many outfits such as Autometer, or Stewart-Warner, and in kit form; you just have to weld in a bung in the header collector(s), and wire it all up. That one for the OBD II cars is slick, but not the deal for a traditional hot rod. As for your three deuces, if you are running progressive linkage, just disconnect the secondary linkage and tune on the center carb by reading your plugs; then figure out where you want the secondaries to come in, and set the linkage accordingly. When you are going WOT, the AFR goes out the window anyway, unless you're going to be running that way for a very long distance or time.
Ted, sorry to hear about your wife. I wish you and her all the best. I will be patient on waiting for the conversion chart. This is something I would like to see without having to buy a complete system you use for tuning once and put it away.

i have a exhaust analaizer which i have used since the 80's which reads the ratio through the exhaust pipes. i like to set the ratio is 14 to 1 for street.

Here's to a start of a whole new project
I'll get back to you in a couple months after I have exhausted every possible adjustment and trial run!
the optimal a/f ratio is 14.7: 1 that is called stoichiometric the problem it only works when the eng is operated at a constant rpm and load and temp. like in a stationary set up like a pump but automotive eng have constantly changing conditions under heavy load the mixture needs to be about 12: 1 or 12.5 :1 the key thing to remember is load you would do well to tun a vacuum gage inside the car a large one like 4in leave it hooked up wile driving do that for a month or 2 you will learn more about carburation than you can learn at any school play with compare the mixture and load and rpm and you can dial it in and have fun and learn a lot......ted
Just pop the 130 bucks on the edey A/F meter and have done with it in two hours effort
