I've always been schooled that it evens out the exhaust pressures. Just think that when that one exhaust valve opens it has its entire exhaust pipe available and the other half also. H pipe best for low end torque and X pipe for high rpm HP.
I did mine just so it would sound better
I did mine after I built my exhaust system but before final car assembly - and it was a challenge - but I do have to say that the Flowmasters do sound nice rather then their usual drone
If its in the truck in your sig do the straight H pipe. Guys at the muffler shop can install it from around 40-50 dollars.. I installed my own with a kit from Summit and a 110 volt mig welder. It will help.... Just make sure you put it in the right place. I believe you can use a crayon and mark a line down the length of the pipe. Turn it on and watch the pipe, the point where it melts first is the area to cross it. If you leave it on for a while eventually it will all melt. Some one else probably knows a better way.
