Check the accelerator pump on the carb. look down the throat with engine off, and pump the throttle while watching, there are 2 squirters that should blast a hard stream when you give it the gas in the 2 front chambers right beneath the choke plate, you can't miss seeing them in action. If they are gummed up, when you hit the gas you create a lean condition(too much air not enough fuel) this will cause bogging and can cause backfiring. The edelbrock carbs when tuned right are a good unit. I have a carter AFB(predecessor to Edelbrock) I rebuild it once a year, it takes about a half hour to do, and it runs awesome.
Check Glenssextons post, what I am reffering to in his blowup diagram it the # 29 Pump plunger assembly..aka accelerator pump. The pump plunger forces a durational amount of gas down, through the carb and out of # 35 the pump jet housing. if they are blocked...your boggin and backfirin. This is one of the most common issues with edelbrock and carter carbs that noone knows about, good luck. By the way, # 20 is the pump arm, this controls the duration of the squirters via 3 holes in the linkage, the top hole for the shortest squirt, middle for medium, bottom for the longest gas blast...normal setup you would have your linkage arm, in the middle hole of the pump arm. Hope this helps.Last edited by DogKrapFace; 08-15-2009 at 01:22 PM.
I've been checking in and figured the site had died forever. I checked today and bam it's back on. Awesome. I don't contribute much here, I just come to read and enjoy hotrod builds and good company...
