quadra jet issue
my son and i have rebuit it twice but it is still leaking through the top of the carb. ill try and post a pic. the arrow points to the leak point. we think it may be a faulty fuel pump letting too much gas through. float is good, but we are at a loss. help.
-
Maybe, too much fuel pressure..................
Needle not sitting in seat properlly.....Was that checked each time it was apart?
Float set too high.....When you say float is OK...do you mean the setting or the fact that the float floats (doesn't sink)?
-
Maybe Denny or somebody will remember, but weren't the Q-Jets really hard on needle and seats? Seems for some reason only the Viton coated needles survived?????

either your float is shot and its sinking or the float level is not right, make shure something is not interfering with the float and preventing it from coming all the way up when you have the carb put together.
make shure the little flapper piece on the gasket around the float and the little needle jets us pointing upwards not down.
if gas is getting through the top vent there you are definitly pumping too much gas into the carb

my son is a putz. we think prtty much know what happened. my son, without me knowing, put a different float in the old carb. it was out of a newer carb. the arms of the float were being bushed down keeping the needle open. letting gas come through continously. ill kick him later. so we are fixing the problem as i speak. hes getting the old one, and ill keep you informed. thanks for the help so far.

okay, leak is stopped. now to the next issue. we have backfireing through the carb. we are trying to go with a standard carb. we disconnected the ecu unit. is that a reason or cause for the back firing. does the disrtibutor need to be changed, (a suggestion from someone else)?

Backfiring sounds like either a bad distributor or lean mixture or bad valves. What do you mean when you say you disconnected the ECU? If you have a points distributor then you should check the shaft for excessive play. All vacuum lines hooked up correctly?
