Just For The Heck.

I Have A 2x4 Fed 428 That Does Not Like The Cold Weather At All. Runs Awsome But Does Not Like To Get Started At All.after It Has Ran No Problem. I Have A Mallory Solid Coil, Balist Resister,and A Electonic Ignition Conversion That Is A Crane Rev Limiter.all The Gaskets Are New ,plugs, Wires, Cap,rotor. To Me It Seems That It Is The Rev Limiter Because It Has Gotten More Ubnoxious Since I Put It In, And It Never Did It When I Had The Pertronic Conversion.but Its A Little $$$$$$ To Just Toss It Out And DO It Over. Any Suggestions Before I Do This???? Thank Scs

Does the carb have a choke and is the choke working correctly????

MY BACK CARB IS MANUAL AND THE FRONT ONE IS ELECTRIC.I DISCONECTED THE ELICTRIC ONE AND THE MANUAL ONE I DONT USE UNTILL I CAN STOP FEATHERING THE GAS PEDDLE TO KEEP IT RUNNING. BOTH CARBD ARE 500 EDLEBROCKS. THE TIMING IS SET AT 8 DEGREES ADVANCE BUT IT WILL COUGH AND SPIT LIKE I THEW THE TIMING OUT OF WACK. THE DISTEBUTER IS NEW AND THE TIMING CHAIN ALSO. Well, looks like you might want to get one or both of the chokes working properly. The choke is what makes an engine run smooth until it reaches it's normal operating temp.

Unfortunantly This Is Going To Be One Ove Thoses Cases That A Person Would Have To See And Hear What Its Doing To Be Able To Help Me. I Appreciate All Of The Suggestions. Thanks Guys.!!! For Some Reason The Motor Does Not Like Both Chokes On At All. Its Harder To Start And The Same With Only Trying To Use The Back Carb Choke On Start Up. The Front One Seams To Be Easier But It Realy Doesnt Make A Big Of A Differance To Even Try The Carb Chokes. You Know How A Motor Doesnt Like To Fire When It Need A Tune Up Bad ,fouled Spark Plugs Tired Timing Chain??? That How It Acts To Me When I Try To Start It.i Have Less Then 10 K Miles On This Motor And I Just Got Through Pulling The Motor Back Apart Again ( Only Because I Put It In A Different Truck ) Rechecked My Bearings ,pistons,valves,etc. Sent It Back In To Be Hot Tanked Just So I Could Repaint It. The only way I can see the choke not helping to get it fired off when cold is that you are running way too rich to begin with. Just a thought,Hank

Denny may have hit something in the starting procedure factor. We have all been so spoiled by the way our new fuel injected cars fire that we think our older carbed ones should start the same way. I have owned some real "cold natured" cars in my life, and my '27 was one of them. It is overcarbed for one thing (2 X 500 CFM Edelbrocks) and every Ford I have owned seems to like to warm up a little anyway before it runs right.

In my Jeep with the carbed 5.0 I have to give the pedal a couple of good pumps then crank it, and it has the electric choke hooked up. For the first 1/2 mile or so it just doesn't run right until temp comes up a little.

Conversely, he may be flooding it too. Every car has it's little quirks, and you kind of have to learn to work with them.

I Guess I Will Still Have To Play With It Still To Maybe Learn What It Likes. When I Had The One Carb On It, Pump The Gas Twice Fire Run For A Second Then Die, Pump It Twice Fire And It Would Stay Running. It Does Give The Impression That It Is To Rich Apon Trying To Start. Can Taste The Gas But That Maybe Because Im Not Pumping It Enough When Trying To Start It And It Maybe Just Lean Popping Back Though The Carbs Where Im Getting My Gas Flavor. Im So Paranoid Of Flooding It I Have Only Been Pumping It One Full Throttle For Both Carbs (progressive Linkage) Then Trying To Start It. As For Pictures I Dont Know How To Get Any Pictures On This Site. My Camera Phone I Have Only Been Able To Seen To Others E-mail As Of So Far. Any Help???????? Thanks Everyone Scs

The edelbrock I had, if it set very long the fuel bowl would be empty. I had to let the electric pump fill the bowls first.

Did you check to see if you have 12 volt to the coil?

FE's are notorious bad starters in cold weather. At 30 below with block heaters I've dumped a cupful of gas straight in the carb, then when it starts firing, pedal the gas like crazy until it revs up. I have never seen an FE flooded on a cold day.

I THINK I MAY HAVE FIGURED IT OUT . 3 FULL PUMPS FOR BOTH CARB AND SET BOTH CHOKES FIRES RIGHT UP. ROUGH AT FIRST THEN SMOOTHS OUT AS IT WARMS UP. THANKS GUYS. SCS:3dSMILE:
