What are you running, carbs or injection?
Don
If it's an HEI ignition and a carb, all you will have to do is supply power from the ignition switch to the + terminal on the distributor. If the engine is EFI, you've got a wiring nightmare on your hands
all i know is that its a carbd v6 to a carbd v8
then just connect the powered side of the ignition to the + terminal on the HEI distributor----it is an HEI, and not a points type distrubutor, right????
uhhhh how do i tell?
HEI will have a huge cap. Points will have a small cap. Besides that, if you peek inside, the contacts or points will be plainly visible on the breaker plate. The HEI will have a set of timing teeth, the points will have a cam.
I think dude before meant to say if it is EFI then wiring could be a problem. If it is EFI ( electronic fuel injection ) then the easiest solution is to swap the entire wiring harness from the donor vehicle.
nah its not EFI and i forgot if its HEI or not ill have to check tommorow
a HEI dist, and a carb is what you need. run a 12 volt wire to the dist, and thats all you need to do with that.Quote:

huh?
you said you was putting a carb on the motor, if you are putting a reg. carb. then it cant be EFI. it will be a carb. motor. that would be the thing to do.Quote:

right. sorry im confused. i still dont know what to do with the ignition box and coil and stuff
A GM HEI distributor is a self contained unit, the controls are internal and the coil is on top of the distributor. All it requires is a power supply from the "ON" connector of the ignition switch. Your old coil and ignition box that were used on the old motor can just be taken off and discarded.
thanks guys!
