I am trying to wire the Mallory flat cap to my small block Chevy.Does it fire 1-3-5-7 down one side and 2-4-6-8 down the other the way it looks like it would or do you wire it normal 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2?

Changing the cap will not change your firing order. Firing order is determined by the crank and cam alone.
there was a companyi think it was cross fire that had caps like that. but not flat. msd used the and old ford flat head cap on the crank trigger distributors. but fired stock for your engine .i think mallory had a flat cap like this on the YL tpy distributors but this was verry long time ago. and the ford flat head will not fit on just any distributors you may be able to do something with the YL and the ford flat head type cap and alot of work .call msd or mallory
sorry i did not see you have a mallory flat cap :HMMM:Quote:

i ran into a very old mallory on a early hemi this used two coils and two point sets and did not fire the way you would think. it was not the stock firing order i do not kown if they made them for chevy before my time but i think they did
The cap should be numbered at the wire outlets, but I would think that it would be 1,3,5,7 on the driver's side like you said, otherwise why would you have a flat cap if the wires had to be run like a regular tower cap? Wire it up and see if the motor will run. If not, then you know.
Mallory introduced the flat cap for marine applications but, of course, it works in a automotive application as well. I used it on the Mallory duel point I had in my Nomad. It follows the normal chevy firing order but works out as only two wires have to cross over to the other side if you put #1 in a certain spot. Do a neat job of running your wires and you've got a cool looking setup.
Well I couldn't wait anymore.I just went out and got all new stuff.Distributor, cap, button, wires and plugs.Fired up the first crank.
