It would be interesting to know the outcome of this one after all this time...
I had a Chevy one time that started running really crappy all of a sudden. I tried everything I could think of to no avail (new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filters, checked the pump for pressure, tested all ignition connections). Finally, I started changing things. I switched carbs with one that I knew was running good and even installed a new fuel pump even though the original showed good pressure. Finally, I swapped distributors (HEI) with a spare one I had and BINGO! Problem solved! As it turned out, when I took the old distributor apart, I found the little black wire from the reluctor was ready to break off and was only making intermittent contact... Just a year or so later I hitched my El Camino up to my race car, backed the whole rig up to my garage and shut it off. When I came back a while later to leave for the track, the El Camino wouldn't start! I screwed around with it for an hour or so; finally gave up any hope of making to the track that night. I just left it there until the next morning. Turned out it had the same problem - the reluctor wire was broke off.
I'm sure glad it did it at home and not at the track...
Hey, does anybody know what Streets did to get kicked off this site? He was a caustic old fart, but always entertaining. I have often wondered if he lurks here sometimes under a different name...
